Default Bounty of the P.N.W.

I have to say that the longer I live here the more I like it! I am still discovering that my favorite food sources are right out my front door. I went picking for these for the first time today.

They taste nothing like the store bought version we know and love!

Now I need to go out and find some morels, huckleberries, shoot a turkey and a bear and my life will be complete.

I am located in Ashland. There is a selection of skinny and thick asperigrass in there. It seams like all the tall ones were skinny and the short ones were fat. No matter to me, it is all going on the grill with a chunk o tuna tonight!

Where did you find it? I LOVE asparagus! We toss it with olive oil and lemon juice, then roast in a 450 degree oven for about fifteen-twenty minutes. Best vegetable there is. If I could pick the stuff wild id be in heaven.

Looks yummy! I like to roll it in olive oil and johnnys, then toss it on the grill with a steak or piece of salmon till its browned. Try it. Simple and best asparguas I have ever had!

We picked this in one of my wifes companies orchards. I cut it up, rolled it in olive oil and lemon peper and salt. Threw it on the grill and it was great. Next time I will just use lemon as the lemon pepper was a little too much for this delicacy. Accompanied it with a rockin piece of tuna from Costco. Seasoned one steak with "blackend" seasoning and the other with the Costco seafood seasoning. Flash fried them in a very hot skillet. OH YAH BABY!!!!! The Costco seasoning was excellent for this type of cooking.

Wow, never seen and/or heard about those. I have picked quite a few mushrooms down there. Next time you go out could you get a picture of them in the wild so maybe I would know exactly what to look for?

Thanks for sharing-Ian

Not sure it really grows wild in Oregon. We used to pick it in some fruit orchards on the east side, but that's the only place I've seen it growing "wild".

Man, that's making me hungry

Ian,

It was picked out of an orchard. As far as how it looks, that is simple. Take one stalk and stick it in the dirt, that is what it looks like. I know, I expected something else too. It really does just grow out of the ground like it looks in the store. One stalk at a time.

You say it tastes nothing like the store bought. So, what does it taste like? I like the store bough. Just curious.

Mark,

The flavor is far milder and sweeter the the commercial stuff. It is so sweet and tender I ate a bunch of it in the field.

Wow! Sounds good. I am keeping my eyes open for some. I've heard about wild asparagus and have been trying to find some. I just haven't gotten lucky yet.

Mark,

Outside of the orchards I have heard that ditch banks are prime spots.
