Default Nosler Announces Lead Free Bullets

http://nosler.com/index.php?p=12

Nosler, the world’s foremost bullet manufacturer, is proud to unveil a new lead free bullet for 2007. The E-Tip® is a revolution in bullet construction and performance.

Nosler’s E-Tip® is built on a highly concentric gilding metal frame, which provides unsurpassed penetration and weight retention. The polycarbonate tip, much like those featured on AccuBond® and Ballistic Tip® bullets, prevents deformation in the magazine, boosts aerodynamic efficiency, and initiates expansion.

Nosler’s exclusive E² Cavity™ (Energy Expansion Cavity™) allows for immediate and uniform expansion yet retains 95%+ weight for improved penetration. Initiated by a unique OD green polycarbonate tip, the E² Cavity provides amazing stopping power and peerless penetration over a broad spectrum of impact velocities.

Along with the E² Cavity and the polycarbonate tip, Nosler’s E-Tip® also features a precisely formed boat-tail that serves to reduce drag and provides a more efficient flight profile for higher retained energy at long range.

For big game hunting or recreational shooting, Nosler’s E-Tip® is a step above today’s “pure-copper” bullets. The E-Tip’s® proven patent pending alloy provides less fouling, while exhibiting superior accuracy and consistent performance over traditional pure copper designs. In the lead free world, the E-Tip® stands alone. Available in 30cal. 180gr.

For a 2007 Nosler® and NoslerCustom® catalog featuring the entire line of AccuBond®, Ballistic Tip®, Partition®, Partition HG™, Custom Competition™, Sporting Handgun™ bullets, muzzleloading sabots, CT™ Supreme Hunting Bullets, NoslerCustom™ Cartridge Brass, and NoslerCustom™ Rifles contact: Nosler, Inc., P.O. Box 671, Bend, Oregon 97709, 1-800-285-3701

Available Fall 2007

That's awesome! Barnes has some competition now. Did I read it right, it's only available in 30 caliber, 180 grain for now?

That's an interesting bullet in a number of ways. Barnes had to go with a tungsten slug at the base of the MRX in order to add a polymer tip. Now Nosler's gone ahead and done it without the tungsten. I think a less complex bullet has a better chance of giving consistent results, not to mention it will (hopefully) be cheaper to buy. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I wonder is anyone will start using Bismuth. Using denser metals should allow guns that shoot say a 150 gr optimally to shoot heavier bullets better. Surface area of the bullet in contact with the barrel will be reduced with denser metals. My one concern with tungsten is that it is a very hard metal, harder than steel which will cause a barrel, being softer, to wear faster.

A large part of the "optimal" performance envelope for bullet weight comes from case capacity rather than bullet length. In that case, I don't think it will make a difference. However, if the issue is seating depth and magazine clearance, then I think the denser material would definitely be a bonus. One of the reasons lead is so useful is that it compresses more easily than copper or tungsten, so you can get a better gas seal around the bullet. Most of the copper fouling that comes from all-copper bullets is because they have to be manufactured slightly undersized in order to prevent pressures from rising too high. This allows the hot gases to slip past the bullet and melt a thin layer of the jacket and cause excessive fouling. Nosler's talk about the gilding metal frame suggests they may have found a way around this. That would be nice if it's true.

I'd also be interested in seeing how long this bullet is. Without any lead in it they pretty much have to make it longer in order to get the same weight. That could cause problems in seating the bullets to magazine length in some guns.

PS - Congrats on the "Heroes of Conservation" plug. That's pretty cool.

Thanks for sharing!
Yes, very interesting. For years I was wishing Barnes would put a poly tip on their X-Bullet to speed up expansion, but when the MRX came out and I saw the price...I was sticker shocked.

Gilding metal frame.....is that a fancy way of saying they plated hard copper over it?
I think I'll let others play w/ it first....I've been down the copper bullet path already.

nosler is reporting great accuracy and perfomance on game at a wide range of velocitys. next time i stop in at the shooters proshop at the nosler factory, i'll try to pick up a box for testing. it will be interesting to see if they will shoot in the 300win mag vangaurd, after getting the trigger tuned. the best groups i get are 1 3/4" before trigger work

I bet Nosler is reporting great accuracy - if you were selling bullets wouldn't you?

Not sure I'll ever try them - happy with what I'm using Swift A Frames and Sciroccos in the big game rifles and Berger in the Bench/Varmint gun.

A side note, I wouldn't want a sub straight denser than lead as the BC would drop. I don't think less jacket length would yield any game measurable results other than effect the trajectory down range - but at reasonable hunting ranges you won't notice the difference anyhow.
