Well, I don't even know where to begin with this one. I usually don't post lengthy stories so i will try to keep this one short as well. Like some of you know, i've been after these pigs for several months. Got a few on my camera, found sign all over, actually spotted one a week ago but could'nt get around on him...Blah Blah Blah...Needless to say, they've caused me some restless nights trying to guess their next move..
After spotting them last week.. I found a great vantage point i could sit and see lots of country and still have time to make a move if i needed too. Two nights ago, Sara went up with me and we sat til dark with only elk, turkeys and deer to be seen. It was storming like crazy last night so Sara decided she was going to stay home.. 7 months prego, so i let her off the hook.. Heres what came out first.![]() Takes about 45 minutes to hike in, so i got settled into my spot at about 6:00...After watching a coyote play in the middle of the meadow and test every nerve i had not to whack him, a boar hog fed out at 477yds below me.. I just bought this gun to shoot that far, but i would hate myself if i missed an only chance..I slipped to 151 yds and got a great rest.. Problem was, the pig was no longer visible..I just waited for about 10 minutes praying the wind wouldn't change and then i saw pigs moving all over...Several piglets were moving around.. I big hog finally stepped into an opening an BAM..She went down....Pigs scattered everywhere...I waited about 10 minutes to see if anything returned, Nothing.. I hiked up the hill to get my camera that i left about 50 yds back. As i was getting back to my gun...The boar comes running over and is sniffing the dead sow...Same rest, same shooting lane...BAM!! Game over for too piggies.... ![]() This sounds kinda crazy, but i'm more excited about these two critters then any i have ever taken...Lots of work went into these, but it finally paid off.. ![]() The locals thought i was crazy for chasing them around..Heres a little perspective on the size of them..

Way to go!!!
I am jealous. I know the ranchers and farmers want nothing to do with these pests, but I sure would like to have the opportunity to hunt them. I do not live near Southern Oregon, so I guess I'll have to wait a few years until they show up in North Central Oregon. Rusty

Thanks guys,
The one boar i would say weighs in over 200lbs. The sow felt about 30lbs lighter... I wasn't being picky..I was going to whack any mature pig that came out...Lucky there wasn't more of them to be shot...I'm going slow a little and get my house resided with Cedar at least until this turkey openner...Then i'm after the game cam hog.. He appears to be bigger then these and is surely a different color...

It's a .300RUM...I put a jewell trigger in it (10 oz). I've never been much of a gun hunter, but a good friend in town builds awesome rifles and he is the inventor of that Advanced Reticle Technology used in Leopold and Smitt and Bender scopes. You run all your ballistics through a computer after chronographing and so forth. It use MOA (minutes of angle)..I print a little card that goes on the stock and can shoot very well out to 800 yds or so...I was blowing up milk jugs at 800 with it, but have never shot it further..Pretty amazing scope...I put it together for spring bear..

Nice work on those pigs.
I grew up in the rogue valley, (back in the 70's and 80's). I Never saw a Pig or an Elk or a Turkey back then, but apparently, these species have all moved in. I am glad you put in the time to kill off this invasive species, because pigs are not from S. Oregon, and their presence is of real concern to all of the Creatures that live down there. Those pigs ABSOLUTELY mess up riparian habitat, which means that young salmon and steelhead are hosed. Since they are very intelligent and prolific, they will outbreed and outfeed everything and anything else out there. They need to be killed off and run off and eaten. Go man Go, You are saving the ecology of Oregon and the Pacific NW . with every one of those cloven hoofed devils you kill.

Yes sir, Darryll Holland is him.. He's a very good gunsmith with a ton of knowledge and just happens to build a heck of a product...It will cost ya though....However, if i were a serious rifle hunter, i wouldn't own anything else..His guns are incredible...

Simply Awesome!
I grew up in the medford area and in 1997 a co-workers son shot one near the or/cal border. I spent countless hours hiking around and never did see one. That is one of the coolest stories I've heard in a long time. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure. Mark

Well done, thanks for the continuing saga. You earned em'.
I know very little about the pig regs(if there are any). I take it you can kill as many as you want, anytime? Sounds like it needs to be done. Let us know how those porkers cook up!

Awesome Job, and thanks for sharing. Its cool when all the homework, and scouting pays off. True sportsman right there, learn all you can about your target, pattern it and then harvest time!!!

Thanks for sharing your ongoing quest. I am sure it feels much better this way, rather than just "lucking" into a pig. PS- How did you get it out whole? Last edited by riverswild; 04-12-2007 at 05:51 PM. |
