Re: Ducks- Ernie Kent Signed
While many of us were disappointed in the past two years performance (2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons), and some of Ernie's personal life issues, the fact is that he has taken the program to new heights, and it would have been a travesty to the program to go in another direction at this time.

Re: Ducks- Ernie Kent Signed
Technically, it was last season (2006) that I wanted to can him.
I don't see how UO could have done anything else, after this year. Ernie's still got something goin' on.

I'm always floored at how much athletic coaches and staff make.....$1million/yr to coach basketball?

Re: Ducks- Ernie Kent Signed
Ernie had some personal issues to iron out (who hasn't? ) that probably effected his concentration on coaching for a while. This last season was stellar. His great teaching and game-day adjustments, plus the respect he has from the players really helped them to over achieve this year. Ernie has always been a great recruiter and this year's exposure will help out even more.
Ernie is a Duck through and through from his days as a player to getting his dream job as Oregon coach. He has always shown great allegiance to the program and it was good to see him coming back!

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon coach Ernie Kent has agreed to a five-year contract extension after leading the Ducks to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament, the school said Wednesday.
The agreement, representing a raise of $200,000 a year, pays Kent $1 million a year through the 2011-12 season.
Incentives could push the total to $1.3 million.
The contract stipulates a payment of $1 million if Oregon terminates the contract before it expires, but it does not have a buy-out clause on Kent's part.
What I think is interesting, is that they made sure to include a buy-out option and that it is only $1mill. Let me explain why this is interesting...Pat Kilkenny is from Spokane and was a very close friend to Mark Few. Mark Few grew up outside of Eugene, and has expressed before that coaching at Oregon is his dream job. Sound familiar? Ernie said the same thing. Anyways, Mark Few has a couple of schools that he can opt out of his contract at Gonzaga for. Oregon is top on that list. Furthermore, Oregon has plans to build a new arena and I can't think of a better way to lure him away from Gonzaga than that. Remember, a $1 million buy-out is not that much in the scheme of sports. Ernie has done a great job at elevating this club to another level - there's no questioning that; however, they are not elite status and Mark Few has the coaching talent to take them there. I don't see Ernie staying for more than 2 years and I think Oregon is waiting for Mark Few to leave Gonzaga for them.
You may agree or disagree; this is just an idea to consider.

Re: Ducks- Ernie Kent Signed
I am happy to see him rewarded for a great season.....
Oregon had a great season and this is well deserved. He had his team peaking at the right time and he gave Florida a very good game.....
The Pac-10 was definately one of the best conferences this season and Oregon one of the the best teams in that without saying.
Future looks good for U of O B'Ball.....

Mark Few is a great guy, played at Creswell where I grew up. He was at a lot of our practices and games trying to get Luke to come to Gonzaga. I think he would make a great coach, but I would love to see Ernie stay until he retires. Mark was not the only coach at our practices, obviously Ernie was there as well to get Luke at the UofO. He spoke at our baccalaureatte (sp?) and SAT 1000+ club breakfast, and is an all around great guy. The players love him and I think you would lose a lot of that team dynamic if you lost Ernie.
