fishing for halibut/lingcod - reg question
For some reason, I thought that the rules stated that you could fish for halibut OR lingcod, but not both at the same time. I also thought that once you start fishing for one, you cannot keep the other, even if you catch one (i.e., you are fishing for halibut, and catch a lingcod, you can't just suddenly decide to be fishing for ling cod).
Is this at all true or am I a victim of some sort of sea legend... ;-) ?
I cannot seem to find any specific info regarding this in the regs...

Re: fishing for halibut/lingcod - reg question
Groundfish are not allowed on board at the same time as halibut during all depth days.
During non-all depth days you can fish and keep halibut inside 40 fathoms and also fish and keep any groundfish, including lingcod.

As Nalu said, it makes a big difference (in OR) if it's an all-depth day or not. Outside of 40 fathoms is now closed (as of April 1 thru Sept 30, p 90 in the regs) to retention of lingcod. Even inside of 40 fathoms you can't have both on board on all-depth days. If you're fishing inside of 40 fathoms on an all-depth day, you can keep either one on board, just not both. regarding the legend, it's your choice of which ONE species you keep on board without regard to what you were actually trying to catch on all-depth days. Until Oct 1, we have to RELEASE ALL lings caught OUTSIDE the 40 fathom line.
IF it's not an all-depth day, you can keep both species if they are caught inside of 40 fathoms.
We can't fish for lingcod any day outside of 40 fathoms (until Oct 1) and we can't fish for halibut outside of 40 fathoms on days that are NOT all-depth days.
I've used inside and outside of 40 fathoms when it's really inside and outside of the 40 fathom line as defined by waypoints established by ODFW.

Re: fishing for halibut/lingcod - reg question
Reviving this old thread because I'm a bit confused....reading the 2008 Regs (clipped it in below).
So if I were to fish tomorrow May 26th (Not an all-depths Halibut day) -
I "could" legally keep per person -assuming all caught inside 40 : - 2 Lingcod
- 6 Rockfish
- 1 Halibut?
- Up to 25 flatfish.
Thanks!
-Will
Humbug Mt. to Cape Falcon When Pacific halibut are onboard vessel, take or possession of fish listed or referred
to in the "Species Name" column on page 99 (plus leopard shark and soupfin shark)
except sablefish prohibited at all depths on open sport halibut "all-depth" days.
•
Cape Falcon to WA/OR Border When Pacific halibut are onboard vessel, take or possession of fish listed or referred to
in the "Species Name" column on page 99 (plus leopard shark and soupfin shark) except
sablefish and Pacific cod is prohibited at all depths on open sport halibut days.

If you stay inside the 40 fathom curve as defined in the regs by fish and game not inside 240ft. these are not the same.

I plotted a course between the waypoints and show set it to show at all times just so I can see at a glance when their cutoff is...
