Shopping Spree
The old lady has OKed a $300 shopping spree Woo Hoo!
All right. I need a new steelhead drift rod and reel. So what would you buy with a $300 cap? I would like a good light rod that I can cast all day, but I would like to be able to handle it if i should happen to hook into a springer or that once in a lifetime trophy buck that I just know is waiting for me out there . Any opinions?

Re: Shopping Spree
Medium-Heavy 10-25 Pound 1000 series, Lamiglas rod, 8 1/2 feet long, two piece. Reel would be a Shimano Curado (SP) reel. I think the model is 200 or 201. Total cost $240-$260. And $10 for Maxima green 10 pound test. Pick up an extra spool for the reel, about $20 bucks.

Re: Shopping Spree
For the reel I'd buy the Shimano Curado 201, that'll set you back $120. For the rod I'd keep checking the Lamiglass web sites sale area for an Esprit in either 8-12lb or 10-20lb line rating, the 10-20 rod is noticeably heavier. If your looking for a rod for summers and can't wait for a good sale, I'm not sure what'd I'd do. You could by a G Loomis GL2. But for a drfiting rod where sensitivty is everything, I'd rather use a higher modules graphite rod like Gl3 or IMX.
You may want to contact TH custom rods and ask them for recommendations since there cost will be no more then the manufacturer.
Just don't rush your purchase and you'll end up with a really nice outfit.

Re: Shopping Spree
Can't quarrel with the choice of a Curado. They are the best bet for the money. But for the rod, consider Fisherman's Marine's proprietary brand --- "North River". If they break or problems occur, you just walk in and they hand you a new one. Now that's service!

Re: Shopping Spree
For the rod, I would look into having one built. You can get a higher quality rod for less money. Fishng partners of mine have used Emery Harry @ Osprey Rods 503.642.2120. I purchased a Lamiglass Pro Series rod for under 100 from Osprey.

Re: Shopping Spree
These guys are right the Shimano Curado is a great reel. For a rod I suggest a Lamiglas 1000 series Med heavy action.Plenty of backbone for a springer or large steelhead and they are on sale now at GI Joes for $109.

Re: Shopping Spree
For the money I would go with the THCustom Rod. $160 plus shipping! TH rods are superior in quality and workmanship and I plan on buying another one soon. You can't go wrong with the Curado 201 or search ebay for an old Ambassadeur.

Re: Shopping Spree
Hi Aron,
I would buy 2 Berkeley AIR IM7 rods (an 8-12 and a 12-25)at $80.00 each and 2 ABU / Garcia 5500C3 reels (these are the reels you used on the fish you caught on my boat) at $64.95 each for a total of $289.90. I have a Curado and love it, but I think for the durability and all around toughness, the Garcia is the way to go. You can also get 2 for the price of 1 Curado. You can spool one reel with 12 lb test and the other with 30 lb test and be ready for most any fish you target.
If you want just 1 rod a Lommis 1025 8-17 GL2 at $165.00 would work. I would rather have the 2 Berkeleys if I had to choose. The Loomis is a better rod, but the Berkeley rods are very good and allow you to have a Salmon setup and a Steelhead setup.
I still have your fish pictures. I will try to drop them by your work. Maybe if you show them to your wife, she will up your allowance to $500.00
Let us know what you end up with.

Re: Shopping Spree
I've seen Bigstew's new TH rod and thats the way I'd go. Very nice rod! Shimano reels are nice but to pricey, check out the new ambassadors. Maxima 10 lb for sure. You might even have some cash left to get some firstcast jigs from sthdr. He sells packs of 11 for $20
