Question Anyone know what kind of fish this is?

I was out bottom fishing on Friday and landed this cool looking fish... first one I have landed on my boat in 4 years of jigging for bottom dwellers, does anyone know what it is?

Looks like it might be a Red Irish Lord.

That's what it is alright-and deadly poison in those spines.

Not quite as bad as a Brown Irish Lord though.

It looks like a red Irish Lord. There is another more common species the Yellow Irish Lord. I have caught & released many Yellow Irish Lords & have never been concerned with their spines other than the opercular spines which can cause a nice wound. The only "deadly" or dangerous fish that resembles a red Irish Lord is the California scorpionfish which varies in color from red to light brown. When I worked on sportboats in San Diego the std. procedure was to cut all the dorsal spines off a scorpionfish before placing it in a customers fish sack. One ugly but tasty fish.

Yep, Red Irish Lord... I caught plenty of them near the YQ Lighthouse.
Whatever they ooze through their pores stinks to high heaven and you do not want it on yout boat, skin, or anywhere else. As mentioned you do not want to get spined by one either. Nasty little critters.

Thanks for the pic, I hadn't seen this species nor had I heard of it. I googled it and didn't get any info about it being poisonous, googled again with poisonous in the search line and still ;didn't get any info about it being poisonous, but of course that doesn't mean it isn't.

I've caught quite a few as well, they're in the sculpin family, like cabezon, and their spines aren't really capable of poking you...kind of flabby (except for the opercular spines). Only poisonous thing I've ever heard about sculpins is that the eggs of cabezon are toxic.
