Default What kind of fish?

Yesterday some co-workers were hiking around Lackamas creek which goes into the Washougal and described to me thousands of fish by some falls....the big debate was...what kind of fish was this....they were about 8 to 10 inches long and had larger rough scales....forked tail....an orange streak along the side..(which were thier spawning colors) they said they picked some up and were squirting thier stuff out ...the mouth was small and round they said like a gold fish One guy swears they were *********...i'm guessing whitefish.....If anyone lives around there or knows what fish this is please post it.

That sounds just like the description I got from a buddy yesterday who lives on Kellogg creek in Milwaukie. He told me the creek is full of paired up fish that fit your description. He told me he could poke them with a stick and they would barely move away. He wasnt sure what they were either.

My guess would be chiselmouth, they are closely related to *********. They get that color during spawning. Best way to tell is to look at the mouth, the have a straight, chisel-like lower jaw. Also could be suckers, I have seen some with nearly rainbow looking colors down their sides, but the guy probably would have known if thats what they were.

Peamouth Chub. They occasionally fill up spots on the Kalama and Lewis as well. Even find rare schools up here in Lk. Sammamish and Lk. Washington, and though finding the schools is rare, they are absolutely enormous schools when you do find them.
