Default Magnum Mallard Decoys

Do any of you guys use mag mallard decoys? I got some Herters for a gift and could exchange them if need be. I am not sure about using mallard decoys that large? I hunt small field puddles, and usually use less than a dozen decoys. What about mixing them with smaller decoys?

i use Mag G&H decoys. I dont think it makes a difference, but some guys like the added size for viz. I use mine with hot buys... mix and match. they are just ducks.

I use only super mag decoys & have had very good success with them. You don't need to use as many super, or mags as you do with life size decoys however, if I were to pack in to a lake or pond I think I would go with the life size decoys as they are much lighter to carry & that would free up some weight for packing out ducks.

Also if you are packing in to a lake I would go with water keel decoys to save on weight as well.

Mixing the mags with life size decoys will work just fine as D3smartie pointed out.

Regards

I really LIKE using Super Mag Mallard dekes and have used them for years.

I know, different opinions on what's "better", big spreads of little decoys or smaller spreads of larger decoys?

It makes sense (to me) that IF I can only carry/transport a limited volume of dekes (and I usually carry mine in paper boy poncho style carriers) that the bigger ones are more VISIBLE individually from a long distance away. And, sometimes I'll only put 3-4 decoys out, in certain locations (werks for me!)

Plus it takes less time to put out/pick up fewer dekes. Sometimes it allows me to move, in a hurry, if I see it's better right over "there"!

In the past I've used Flambeau Super Mags and have even drilled holes and emptied the sand out of the keels to make them lighter/easier to hump.

In this aspect they were great, but a few years ago I started having them crack on me along the keels. Then the next year, more! Then this past season ALL of them cracked, and all in the SAME area!

I called Flambeau on this and they told me they DIDN'T CARE!

Well so be it! I'm not buying any more of their sh*t decoys!

I went back and replaced all mine with the good old tried and true G&H Magnums.

G&H has always made the BEST LOOKING decoys IMHO, just that their Super Mags are waaay too heavy to be humping all over!
