Default Good Sturgeon combo for $150-$200?

What is a good combo for Sturgeon for aroun $150-$200? I will actually be using this set-up for Halibut. My old Sturgeon rod is a little dated plus it is fun getting some new gear.

What do all of you sturgeon gurus like?

Thanks!

I use the Penn 321GTI reel (left hand retrieve) (320 for righties) at about $80.00 and the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger rod in 20/50lb line wt. for $50.00 to $60.00. I put 65lb Tuff Line Plus on incase I hook a monster. If your fishing for Halibut in Oregon this setup should be suffice.

I have a shimano Catala 401 (left handed)paired up with 7'9" NorthXNorthwest (or something like that - GIJoes carries them), one piece. The rod is like 20-50lb rating. Real sensitive tip with a strong butt section.

I like this setup cuz I can put a ton of 50lb tufline on the reel, and the rod can feel every little bite but still bring in big keepers. I have another salmon rod I also use that is a med action 12-25lb, it bends more when you got a shaker on but its not anymore senstive for feeling the bite.

I managed to get both pieces on sale, so the total came to ~150 bucks. It should still be under 200 buck if you pay full price.

I second the Penn 320/321 on a 7' Shakespeare Ugly Stick rated 20 - 50 lb. I would increase the line to the 85lb tuff. I have that setup and have landed several in the 8' range.

Great setup for an inexpensive price.

Penn 330GTi, and an Ugly Stick. When it comes to reels, go big or stay home!

Does the 320 hold enough line for going to the depths of the halibutt home? One place we fished for them they were at about 900 ft deep. I'm gonna pick up a couple of 330 gti's. I think they will hold enough line.

320 GTI Line Capacity: 320 yd. 20 lb. test
330 GTI Line Capacity: 350 yd. 30 lb. test
that's mono test lines.

I think I am going with Braided line and should be able to load it with 80lb Tuf line or power pro and be okay. I think you need to have about 375 yards for the deeper holes.

Does anybody agree with this?

I just bought the Penn Boat Combo from Fishermans about 6 months ago. Comes with the Penn 0712 7' 15-30 Rod and the 320 0r 321 GTI. Got all this for under $100 sale price. Have seen these on sale quite a bit at Fishermans. Seems to be a pretty decent rod to me.

I say go with the Penn 321GTI and a 2201 Tiger Stick too! Great rod/reel combo and pretty in-expensive.

I would't recomend a levelwind reel for big fish.
The 321GTI is a bit on the small side for deep halibut fishing. A Penn Senator 113H is about the best halibut reel, in the mid price range, on the market. 475yds of 30lb mono. Mine are spooled with 65lb Power Pro.

Ugly Sticks are hard to beat for a good low price meet rod.

The Shimano "Charter Special" level wind, lever drag is very sweet. It also casts much better than I thought it would. 20-50 Tiger Stik has all the flex and sensitivity in the tip of a Salmon Rod, but you can't break it. I own Penn GTI310's and GTI320's. The Shimano is much better.
