they may be copying what one of the largest sporting goods companies did...

"dick's" is a HUGE chain of stores...and, soon they will open up one at washington square!

when I first moved to Portland I thought GI Joes sold army surplus supplies...i can understand why they would change the name.

I think they sold out to a California investment group and that is why they had the marketing change.

Well, yeah, when G.I. Joe's started they DID sell army surplus stuff, mostly, though that original store (on North Vancouver?) made most of its money, I suspect, selling cigarettes at lower, taxless Oregon prices to nearby Washingtonians.

And the rest is Joehistory.

There have been a number of evolutions through the years. I remember basic hardware, toys, and kitchen items in the Beaverton store in the 70s.

It always seemed like the biggest auto parts store around but the "auto" part seems to be getting squeezed out. The old "G.I. Joe's Sports and Auto" has turned into "Joe's Sports, Outdoor, and More."

Times change, I guess.

They wanted to be more PC im sure, with the WOT anything 'GI' companies probably want to shy away from......plus the whole 'evil guns' attitude
