Default Night Jetty Fishing

For anybody interested and wanting to join us I am going "sea bass fishing" on May 19th with Fishbait. I have been fishing for Sea Bass for many years from the jetty at night and it is a lot of fun. I haven't done it for a year or two but I always had best luck in the spring months. The location will be at the North Jetty at Barview (Tillamook Bay). To get to our fishing spot enter Barview County Park at the town of Barview just north of Garibaldi a couple miles. Once entering the park, just stay left and drive out to the coast guard tower. There is a big parking lot there and lots of rocks to fish from. It isn't like this is giving anybodies honey hole away. I think everybody knows where the jetty is.

We will start fishing on May 19th at 9:00 PM (yes in the afternoon) and proceed to about 1:00 AM on May 20th. This is a fishery that is way under utilized. Bring a couple lanterns so you can see. The more light the better the fishing. I hope to line up a generator and some halogen lights. I believe the lights bring the bait fish, soon to be followed by the spiny ones.

I use a 6 foot trout type pole, with a spinning reel. I usually go with 6 pound line. Many baits will work, but I prefer to use a 1/4 ounce lead headed jig and a 3 inch curly tail rubber worm. Flip it out and reel in slow. They will usually soft bite it, so a sensitive pole is a must. But like all fishing there are always the ones that like to freight train it. You will learn very quickly if you reel to slow you will snag on the big boulders. Gotta find a speed that allows the fish to hit it and not get hung up. I usually take a few colors of jigs along, yellow, white, black, various green and clear colors with glitter flakes. Sometimes they are finicky, sometimes it doesn't matter what you throw at them. I have seem people fish heavier equipment and baits on the bottom but I really like the light gear casting and retrieving.

If it rains the rocks are slippery and not a good place to be. If the wind blows it is hard to feel the bites. The best time to fish is a couple hours after dark at a high tide. A small tide change (not a lot of run off) helps also. A full moon seems to help also, we will only have a 1/4 moon this night. If it looks like a storm is blowing in the fishing will be a bust. I have had lots of nights when it is a fish every cast. But that can be followed the next day with no fish. I have gone home with no skin on my thumb from lipping them on good nights. Limit is 10 fish.

The high tide is 6.9 feet at 10:54 PM. Fishing should be best for an hour or so on both sides of this. Fishing low tide is tough since you need to stand lower on the jetty which puts you on the slippery rocks, stick to high tide for this fishery.

Check list to bring should you wish to join us: pole, lead head jigs, rubber worms, bucket, lanterns, positive attitude.

Anybody with any questions can email me at rjackalope@aol.com.

I am hoping for good weather, no wind and a few new friends to fish with us.

Hey Roy, Neptune and the four winds willing, count me in. I haven't fished near the Coast Guard tower in years. Since I got my latest boat. Is the small green crappy jig still the lure of choice?

Hey, even the Bassholes can get in on it!!

BOE-
I would love to give it a go but right now I already committed to a trout trip to Canada. If it falls through I will be there and can bring my generator.

Sounds like fun!!!
I'd love to go but am otherwise committed!
I have never really jetty fished before and this sounds like a great way to start.
I have a question,
How does jetty fishing at night compare with jetty fishing in the daylight hours under the same conditions as far as tides, good weather, moon, etc?
I have a couple of 10 and 11 year old boys who would jump at the chance of doing something like this!
Thanks,
mike

The last time I fished of those rocks at night we were really nailing the bass on 1/4 oz. jig heads and white Mister Twister 3" grubs, then the fishing went dead, real fast.. then a shark about 12' long came into the rocks right at our feet...doing some sort of feeding frenzy...called it a night...

Wow, it has been a long time since I have posted anything on the board. Kudos to Jen for all the great improvements!

BOE - I think you can count me in on this adventure, although I may require a rope around my waist - you know... Satuday night, late, adult beverages, slippery rocks....You get the picture !!

I'll be in touch...

My brother-in-law was in Tillamook this weekend and went jetty fishing at barview both Friday and Saturday night. Limits both days. He said Saturday about an hour after high tide it got hot, a fish every cast. White was the go to color for a jig.

He said there was only a couple other people out fishing each night.

He said they were averaging about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds, but he got one that was about 5 pounds.

BOE,
I think I will take you up on your invite and I'm going to bring my 16 year old daughter, she loves to fish. We have never fished from the jetty before but have always wanted to learn so this sounds like allot of fun. Look forward to meeting you and other ifishers and enjoying some fun fishing and a couple adult beverages. Until then, thanks.

I'd LOVE to join you and bring a lantern or some lights, but....
I'm going after HALIBUT!

I can't believe that you guys are not going after a barn door !

If ya were to do this any night that isn't during the all depth Halibut season count me in!

By the way, I WOULD NOT bring young children to fish the jetty in the daylight hours, let alone at night. The rocks are too big, slick and dangerous for small children.

If ya go, be careful and have a great time.

I think I'll have to come too if Artwo is bringing his 16 year old daughter, she's right up my alley. I haven't ever been sea bass fishing so it will be a good time for me to learn. Now I just have to figure out how to get from Portland to Tillamook.

Artwo - Glad you are coming. The more the better. You had better keep an eye on your daughter. It looks like she already has fishing suitors. Looking forward to meeting you and family.

Ray - I dont have a barn, so I guess I dont need a door. I wont take my boat that far out in the ocean. To far to run to land if it gets rough. Heck, we almost sank my boat in the bay. I went out a few years ago with a friend and it was a great time.

Winterkill - Stay in touch, I may have a ride for you. I got an email from another person interested in the trip who said they may have a open seat for the ride down.

As it gets closer, I will bring this back to the top. Maybe we can all have dinner before we start fishing. Maybe we BBQ up something.

Call me "closed minded", but all I ever take are white twist tails. When most people are catching bass so am I. When most are not I'll still get hits.

I would like to learn some new methods though.

I too am very interested in this trip! I agree that we should all meet sometime before hand or at least figure out the logistics of the trip well before the designated date. Great Idea!!!

Whichever size jighead you use, paint 'em or buy 'em in glow in the dark. Hit them with a hand-held flash and hang on. You'll get hit two to one compared to the non glowing jigs, at least that's what i've found in my night fishing adventures. Just don't accidentally hit your buddy in the eyes with the flash as he's taking a step onto the next rock

Dang it B.O.E., that's a halibut day!!! Do you suppose I could drag my tired behind up the coast a hundred miles to go to your party?

Maybe we'll have some flattie to roast over the fire. I'll attend if possible, maybe the weather will lock out the ocean. Sorry Roy, I forgot what I was doing that day.

Roy, How generous of you to offer to supply the beer for us all. You are a very kind person. In response to your question, either Black Butte Porter or Widmeere Hefavisen (sp) would be fine.

No problem John. I was not aware of the halibut day when I set this up. I gotta go when the tides allow a reasonable fishing time. Given a choice I would go halibut fishing and be reeling while I was watching others chumming

If you can make it great, if not, oh well maybe another day. I will be saving you a rock on the north side of the north jetty. If you need me, I will be on the south side of the north jetty.

Looks like we might have a few people making the event

Sounds like a great way to meet some neat people and get re-aquainted with some sea bass. Used to fish for them at night at the north jetty in Ilwaco. For a kid, fishing at night or in the early morning fog was kinda scary. Looking forward to it. Jen, if you decide to have a BBQ let us all chip in or bring something.
