HI all. MariAnn has asked me to share this with the group. If any of you are interested in volunteering for Oregon Marine Board activities the contact is listed below. We got plenty of help at the boater show and they are grateful for it.

Oregon Zoo Event - Safe Kids hosts the event
Portland Zoo
May 5, 2007
7:00 am - 3:30 pm
Event begins a 9:00 am - 2:00 pm (safety stations must be ready by 8:30 am and stay operational until 3:00 pm)
I just need one more volunteer for this event. If you live in the
Salem area we can car pool. It will only be a Q&A booth with information
or a very small and simple activity. Would like one of the Boat Oregon
Volunteer Instructors to volunteer for this event...he/she would be
more familiar with the Marine Board and Boat Oregon material.
5th Annual Youth Outdoor Day 2007 - Ducks Unlimited hosts the event
E.E. Wilson Wildlife Refuge - (Between Monmouth and Corvallis on 99W)
June 2, 2007
7:00 am - 5:30 pm
Event starts at 8:30 am - 2:30 pm
Volunteers get charged $10, but the Marine Board will cover the cost
for you. The $10 includes a shirt for each volunteer, lunch, and a party
after the event with steak and chicken being served.
This is the first year that the Marine Board is participating in this
event. I'm guesstimating that I will need at least 9 volunteers. I'm
going to set-up a PFD relay race for the kids. Lines of 4 - 5 with PFDs
at the end. Each kid must run to the end and fit the correct life
jacket... the first group to have the correct PFD fitted wins. Don't know
what they will win, but something. This is a huge event with several
clubs participating. They are expecting more than 500 kids of all ages.
This is going to be a learning experience for me with this event. To
learn more about the event you can google "Oregon Youth Outdoor Day" or go to Oregon Ducks Unlimited website.
Passport to Fishing - ODFW is the host
Bonneville Dam Hatchery
June 9, 2007
8:00 am - 2:00 pm
Event starts at 9:00 am and goes until 1:00 pm.
Attached is the flier explaining the event.
We are fitting life jackets on kids and educating the parents and the
kids of how to properly fit a life jacket. The "station" is similar to
what we did at the Boat Show (fitting life jackets only), but set up a
little differently.
I need 6 more volunteers total; three to assist at the Passport table
(stamping passports and handing out goodies), one or two people
directing traffic or roving, and 1 more fitting life jackets. We can alternate
duties as the event progresses so you're not stuck at one station.
Last year we fitted just under 1,000 kids of all ages. We had a lot of
fun, but I learned the hard way that I needed more volunteers at this
event. Lunch is provided to the volunteers and they have a drawing and
desserts after the event (3:30 pm) for volunteers only.
If you would like to volunteer for any of the events, please e-mail me
ASAP so I can place your names on the volunteer lists. I need to give
the names to the hosts of the events. I will send you more information
once you have signed up and I attend the other event meetings. I need
to check with my supervisor, but I think the Marine Board will cover
fuel costs for travel to each event.
Thanks so much,
MariAnn
