Followed directions on earlier post to Cowlitz via the Kelso exit. Got my limit 100 yds North of the courthouse on the little beach there. (watch out for submerged rebar).
Deeper passes netted more fish.
Fishermans has good nets on sale for 19.99

Go get some!

net rentals: in the past there has been a guy that rents nets for 5.00 from his house near the steel bridge on the west side of the river. hope that helps you and btw that is where I netted today and got my limit.

Kujo, Gearhart gardens is a park on the Cowlitz a few miles upriver form Kelso. Walk the dike and you will see the trails downhill to the dipping spots.

They pile up behind anything that breaks the current. First dip is usually a bigun.

I was there yesterday, 20 minute limits. OOps! I meant to say: It was a lot of work and everyone else should stay home this weekend!

Went this morning. Took 20 minutes to get my limit. The size averaged 12 fish per pound. I tried the extension on my net but did better with just the seven foot handle. Had 2 or 3 dips with 20-30 smelt.

I know they changed the time frame for dipping this year. Anyone tell me if it is 6am to 6pm? Thanks. Was hoping to dip this evening.

20lb limits per person and 6a.m. to 10p.m for 7 days a week dipping. Just got back and the smelt are holding up river of kelso in lexington. 20 fish a dip in lexington 5 mins north of kelso on the east side. kelso is 10 dips 6 fish right now but will get better this afternoon thru the eve. Be prepared to move and remember lots of access on both sides of river once you locate the kelso bridges. look for the rigs parked along either side and your there.

I have a six Gallon bucket that looks just like a Five Gallon bucket. ( Just kidding )

Anyone have a good Smelt Smoking Recipe they would like to share ?
I am doing the Atkins thing so low carb would be great.

Low Carb Smelt with Diet Beer under candle light ! Does that work ?

Say, this may be a stupid question, but seeing how the regs are you never know. Being from Oregon, do I need a Washington license to dip smelt in washington?
