North Santiam unit litter out of control
Sometimes I feel like we hunters and gun owners are not going to be content until the whole non-hunting community is completely disgusted with us and dieing to vote. I have been scouting for deer areas alot, lately. The amount of litter and shell casings is obscene. Beer cans- even way up in the middle of no where- who does that? I hate carrying my wallet, much less a six pack. Every private timber company with a locked gate and a nice request of no motorized vehicles has an ATV super highway going around the gate. Aren't the fathers teaching their kids that it's not OK to throw the empty box of shotgun or rifle shells in the ground? Are there ANY other user groups that treat our forest like that? Does anybody have any ideas on what can be done? Dave

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
I see the same thing up in my neck of the woods. I remember when I was being brought up in the Outdoors and my dad would always point out things like litter, junk, poached animals, and trees that were fell for the fun of it and he'd always say how so few people it took to ruin the privliges for so many. I know how you feel Dave.

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
It's the fathers that are doing it, the poor kids don't stand a chance. It won't be long and the timber companies will have trail cams and lots of pictures to take to court. A guy could start a pretty good bussiness doing that, if the timber companies would foot the bill.

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
I had a pretty messed up experience a couple of years back. I arrived a bit late to the locked gate that I hunt behind (about 1/2 hour before day light) and just before I was heading back in with my nephew for his first day of hunting a group of 3 trucks pulled up and out poured at least 12 hispanic men.
I tried to communicate as to where they would be hunting, so I could have a safe hunt, but none spoke english well enough for me to have a clear communication. My nephew and I hunted with no good results. These guys were loud and obnoxious to say the least.
I heard several gun shots and thought that the hispanic group was shooting at deer and missing, but it turned out that they set up a target within 10 yards of my car and were doing a little target practice before they left. They used an empty beer box as their target. In addition, when I arrived back at my car I noticed a large group of empty Red Bull cans and Beer cans as well as food wrappers, shells and other garbage that was not there before their arrival.
I picked up some of the debris, but not all of it. I was mad to say the least and was telling my nephew that this type of behavior is what gives hunters a bad name. The loudness and obnoxious behavior for the deer woods, I could tolerate, because that is their right to be there, but the total disregard for the private timber company land was pitiful to say the least.
I felt like a helpless victim of association because they were hunters too.
Maybe we should start a hunter clean up day for some of these private timber companies, so they will keep access open for us.

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
A local clean up day sounds like a great idea and if there are locked gates involved maybe they could unlock and let us take ATV's and a couple trucks in to haul the garbage out. By using motorized vehicles we can get more done and I am sure all involved would be very respectful in having the privilege to use such means.

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
I keep a large milk crate in the back of my truck and when I'm just putting along a gravel road I stop and pick up the beer cans. I usually fill it up when I'm done for the day, then I pour them into a garbage sack for the ride home. The crate holds about $2.50 worth of cans. It helps clean up the woods, and puts a little fuel in my truck as well.
I'm starting to find a bunch of those super energy drink cans in the ditches this year. Between the drunks and the "wired" dudes, the roads are getting spooky!
Another sight that chaps my backside is where guys shoot clay pidgeons out over a canyon. It's probably illegal in the first place, but I don't have a real problem with them shooting off the road. What I do have a problem with is they leave 2 or 3 boxes of shotgun shell hull's laying on the side of the road. Pick the crap up and TAKE IT HOME!

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
I made a Reno trip, last week-end. Via Through hwy 58 Then back through silver lake Military road. Lots of Squeek's...
during the trip, what caught my eye.. Those Energy drink cans & Coffee cups. ALL over the place. That is really SAD. It's not the truckers, doing this. Would be more the Yuppie travelers. Plus few of the Gator-drinks filled with unknown Fluids. OR the Smokers, tossing out the Burning Cig's. see them on the roads still smoking...
People Do not care anymore!!.. They lost Respect for everything. better enjoy the sports now, for the time is getting shorter!!..

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
This subject makes me mad. A couple years ago a friend and I went up the Memaloose road. Looking for a different area to hunt. Every spot that we stopped at was peppered with shotgun shells not to mention the garbage and beer cans too. That road has no shooting signs all the way up it. Also why would anyone be out shooting and drinking at the same time.
Last year at one of my local spots I had finished hunting and was driving home. About a 1/4 mile down the road from my spot a white van with a group of hispanics were unloading a washer and drier. I saw them speed off towards the direction i had just come from. There are dumpstopper signs up and down this road so as soon as i got reception i called it. Alot of good that did cause i saw the same group of hispanics dumping another load later on in the month.
I pick up other peoples garbage when I'm out because it doesn't belong there and i really dont like seeing it.Those types of people who dump the trash are the reason why alot of areas are closed off. And people like us who hunt and fish there are getting turned away from these areas because of someone elses carelessness and stupidity. I was taught to leave an area the way i find it.

Join the Capitol Chapter OHA habitat and clean-up project on May 5th. The Chapter and several other orgainzations have been cleaning up the area along the Britenbush River out of Detroit for 6 years. There will be lots of other habitat work to be done as well.

So many people today live their life as if there's no tomorrow. For them, it's all about instant gratification, regardless of the consequences. For them, the most important words are I and Me, instead of Us and We.

I find it kind of funny that OHA chapters will pay $50.00 a year to do highway litter clean ups but never organize a hunter camp clean up that don't cost a dime to do!
Instead of doing the once a month highway litter maybe do a once a month hunter camp clean up should be in order.
I also think if you cannot read the Fish and Game regs and understand them then you should not be allowed to purchase a hunting and fishing license.

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
It's been happening for a loooong time. People just dont give a ****! My dad used to be a manager for BC, and one time he was out in the woods and found a pile of home trash. Enveolpes in the trash indicated that a contractor that worked for him was responsible. One simple phone call, either the trash goes, or you do. The pile was gone the next day. I climbed out of the gulley years ago after doing a spawning ground survey only to find some idiot pitching a truckload of comp shingles over the side of the road. The lane county sheriff's dept dealt with that. Again years ago I found a pile of trash dumped behind the St. Louis ponds. OSP had fun with that one as well. The pile mysteriously dissappeared. Trash dumpers ar criminals, and stupid ones at that. That is the problem. People who litter and dump trash are stupid. If I caught someone doing it, I'd make them pick every bit of it up (don't ask me how) and follow them for as long as it takes.

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
I do not know about paying $50 for a roadside cleanup. I do know that many OHA Chapters do all kinds of clean-up projects. The clean-up the Capitol Chapter does extends into several ares of the national forest and many of the area are where slob hunters have camped. So I guess they are doing what you are talking about Salmo trutta. What is wrong with OHA doing roadside clean up as well as all the other projects they are doing?

Re: North Santiam unit litter out of control
I am with all you guys feeling ticked off at the trash we see. I used to love to going to lost lake in the coast to fish it is just trashed I wa sup there this weekend and picked a bag in no time. Im amazed that people think nothing of taking a full beer but can not stand the weight of packing it out. Or the guys who bring house hold appliances out to shoot up and leave them. We even came up on a fire still buring yesterday out by Timber that some had just left burning along with pop and beer vans smolding in it..gr!!!!

What camps do you clean up Salmo trutta?
I am in your area and may have time to with your camp clean ups.
The Pioneer Chapter cleans 213 between Carus and Mulino, and I might be able to get a few guys from the chapter to help you with your camp clean ups

I am not a road hunter that is for sure but I see nothing wrong with cleaning up anywhere and also have the name of OHA out there.
By the way a lot on the project on the Detroit Ranger district is out in the forest and we all take bags along and clean up as we go. There are several campsites off the river that we clean up every year.
If you look for fault you can always find it if you want to help you can find ways to do that also.
I guess I will be looking to see you on a project and helping clean up this year.
