Default What planet are californians on?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070331/.../falcon_rescue

I about had to do a doubletake when I read this article.

Apparently, eons of successfully rearing young from precariously high cliffs and rocky ledges is not enough to satisfy these do gooders.

I mean really, are the birds going to have to fly into a hospital where the snakes and the mice and the hawks and the squirells are all equals, in order to have their chicks in an approved location or have them taken away by the state to be reared in a lab?

Sometimes folks just need to l eave mother nature alone.

You know what I mean

Survival of young reared on bridges is extremely rare. Try it yourself sometime.

I don't see a problem with this. These birds didn't evolve around human made structures. What seems like a suitable nesting site to them sometimes has some pretty dangerous conditions like traffic, downdrafts, etc.

(The peregrine falcon was removed from the federal government's endangered species list several years ago but remains fully protected under California law.) Sounds dumb to me to try and save this protected bird .They should probably focus more on the pigeon. What do ya think?

Sounds to me like they are trying to help the species thrive ... on one hand, the removed eggs will probably have a better chance of surviving to wild through artificial rearing, but as the article points out, "By removing the eggs from the nest, scientists hope George and Gracie will return to their old nesting site and lay new eggs within a few weeks." Sounds prudent to me.

Now, if we could just re-establish condors in the Columbia gorge, that would be really cool!

I dunno. Given the many ways we screw things up for wildlife, I'm thinking that helping Mother Nature out once in awhile isn't "dumb".

When I attended UC Santa Cruz back in the 70's the Birds of Prey program was one of the best in the nation.........I bet they are even better thirty years later. I would leave this one to the experts. At least you got some negative California bashing into IFish.....good on you.

Sounds sensible to me. Now the lawsuit by some tree hugger organization in No. Ca. to implement a 1500.00 fee/year for all recreational boaters (including kayaks and inflatables) sounds pretty stupid to me.

I hate it when these wildlife experts try to save an animal by glueing a 2lb radio transmitter to their back or hang a collar(bright orange or blue or lime green)around their neck then send 'em out amongst their predators.

Next thing you know they'll be putting brightly colored collars on geese, wait a minute, never mind.

Or how insecure California's are about Oregon.
BCF, just tuging on the chain having fun. Laugh a little and every one will think you are a native from Oregon.

You're missing the point. They do it for a reason. Sure, it might put the animal at a disadvantage, but then better methods will be employed to find the answers to questions we all should be seeking to keep hominids from killing this planet.

Until something good comes from California, I'll be insecure about it! Oh, wait, they brought the wine industry here...Oh wait again, their wine isn't nearly as good as ours....hmm?
