Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
I was thinking the other night about baits that I use for sturgeon. I will admitt that I use smelt about 90% of the time and squid about 9% and other bait the last 1%. With all the talk about fishing clam beds, has anyone ever used clams as bait (no shell of course!)? Why not? I was thinking that they would stay on well like the squid and still put out a good scent.

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
wtbarrong,
Funny you mention it because "live to fish" and I were talking about this the other day at work and we think the same as you. We figured the gators would be all over clams, so we decided to try it! Thursday of last week, we anchored up in the channel for sturgeon, and wouldn't you know it....narry a bump on clams! We were pulling them out left and right on smelt & squid but NOTHING on clams...not even a BUMP! Maybe others have had different success with them, but as for me, i'm sticking with what I know works!

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
Never tried clams, because at least razors are to good to use for bait, but I have heard from different viable sources that nothing beat gummy worms for keepers. I even saw a guy using them riged like a rubber worm for steelhead once.

Nickle-
Are you talking from experience or just throwing out an idea? I have thought about using crawdads, but would you use just the tail, whole, or the meat in the tale? I know the meat works great for topping a kokanee lure!

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
A couple years ago, I read on this board about using orange peels for bait (sturgeon) - I talked my then fishin' buddy into trying it... needless to say, he didn't fare too well but we did get a couple laughs out of it! zip

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
I was on the willy on tuesday and caught 1 shaker on a hook with about three strings of the thickest yarn I could find that I soaked in Maries Sturgeon Scent.

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
Me and my buddy and his wife were out one day and she was getting bored , bite was kinda slow . So she decided to string a nightcrawler through a piece of black licorice. First try she hooked a pretty nice shaker. Maybe a anise thing who knows.

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
If you ever wondered what to do with the badly smashed razor clams ... well try a strip as an adder to your smelt.
Neck and fringes work best.

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
I 2nd the Crawdads, works like a champ.. stretchy thread them on your hook then step on them just enough to crack the shells but still keep them on the hook.
A good back up bait I use to make sandshrimp go farther is the clam (cockles) sandshrimp cocktail. The sand shrimp are there for taste and the clams for bulk. shakers are less likley to clean you if you are dozing and you can stickem on the comeback bite. With just sand shrimp, you miss a good bite you almost always need to reel in and rebait

Re: Sturgeon Bait - Odd Stuff
I tried Oysters a few weeks ago on top of what I suspect is a clam flat on the willy. No bumps No bites. Did catch fish on squid in the same spot on the same day.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I have tried several times, NOTHING. Tried whole, tails, NOTHING worked for me.
I was catching them below Bonni and fishing it right there.
As soon as I put fresh sand shrimp, EASY limits.
