Re: PLEASE HELP... Mechanic needed
a few questions to help aid in your search.
Ring gear on the torque inverter???????? Hmmm, I am old school backyard do it yourselfer, but does a torque converter have ring gear??????????
Never had anything newer than a 90 apart....
the only teeth or gears I can think of is the starter, and flywheel.............
what kind of vehicle, yr it was produced.....do you have a service/repair manual(chiltons etc) replacement fluids for the converter
You will need to disconnect battery, linkage, seperate tranny/trans axel from motor/housing and thats just the first 3 hrs.....
That is a very messy job, and will require an entire day to get done in a drive way.

Re: PLEASE HELP... Mechanic needed
Maybe this will help some . . .
Fshklr is correct - - 'pretty big job. You're looking at removal or, at least, moving-back the transmission. 'Will have to rent a transmission jack. I do most of my own maintenance and repairs but I probably wouldn't tackle this job on my own vehicles. If you don't find someone here, you might see what you can find on CraigsList under services, automotive. Don

Re: PLEASE HELP... Mechanic needed
If the ring gear is actually part of the torque converter. On a front wheel drive you will most likely have to drop the tranny.Probably not enough room to just slide it back.
If the ring gear bolts to the tranny. Its a bear, but you may be able to slide the tranny back enough to unbolt the ring gear, and drop it out. Then put the new one on.Still a bear. But not as bad.

Re: PLEASE HELP... Mechanic needed
What kind of car is it?
Most starter "ring gears" are part of the flex plate, which bolts to the crank. The torque converter then bolts to the flex plate. The flex plate is probably the part you need.
Most automobile auto trannies are under 150 lbs, a tranny jack is nice, but not required. 3-4 hours in and out is pretty standard.

Re: PLEASE HELP... Mechanic needed
THE car is an 84 Honda accord automatic front wheel drive... I was told that the ring gear on the flex plate is welded to the converter on this rig. I found a new converter for $150 that includes all parts needed. This car as the car i had before this one was given to me by ifish friends and god bless them as they served me well when needed but both rigs only lasted a couple months before something big went wrong with them,(no fault to anyone...I am not hard on my rigs and try to keep them maintained as I can do some general maintenance myself but this job is to big for me alone! Thank you all who have helped! I have all next week off as I was injured last year and have only been released to part time work so money is tight and I may have to sell it as scrap and try to find a inexpensive car to get me back and forth to work in the weeks to come? Again thank you all for your help and support I would have been sunk if it had not been for ifish! Thank you Jennie for my ifish friends!!! Curt 503-317-9277 Hillsboro
