Newport OTC event- other fun things
Ok, so last year we didn't get to fish Newport. This year, my bet is that we do! For those that attended last year, it is a widely known fact that it was a GREAT TIME! Of course this year will be as well.
So, Newport is my event. I can't speak for the other places, but I did want input on an idea that I had in case the weather did blow outside.
Who would be up for a Yaquina Bay Poker Run? They do this with offshore boats, and on motorcycles, and with any other sort of thing you can imagine. I wanted to do this last year, but time just ran out. That way we could all still participate in a water event, have some competition, and bragging rights.
Other ideas?

Re: Newport OTC event- in case of weather...
Since we're just brainstorming here, how about a Man Overboard Drill and Contest?
* Bring boat to tuna troll speed - 7 to 9 mph
* Throw dummy overboard (no, not me, a mockup)
Then the team has to:
* Mark MOB on GPS
* Maneuver boat back to dummy
* Throw a life ring or throw-bag to dummy
* Bring boat safely up to dummy
* Lift dummy aboard
Quickest time wins. (10 secs can be taken off if thrown line goes across dummy, 5 secs off if it is within a body length)
Or sumpthin' like that...

Re: Newport OTC event- in case of weather...
I like Skein's idea. The YB poker run sounds fun, but I'd be concerned about 60 off-shore boats zipping around the bay - Maybe I'm not understanding how it would work, but I'm envisioning something similar to Hagg lake speed boat races, but with bigger, heavier boats more densely packed within the bay. Again, maybe I'm not getting the right picture.
Another idea might be a crab derby like they do in Nehalem Bay for Fathers' day weekend (or thereabouts). Put out a bunch of tagged crab for prizes. I don't know what the ODFW implications of that would be, but I'm sure the folks who put on the NB derby could provide the info.

Re: Newport OTC event- in case of weather...
Chromaflage-
That definitely would be a concern, and one that I've considered but don't have an answer for. My thought would be that it was just a transit from place to place, but perhaps it would just be too crowded. Maybe only one or 2 cards are on the water, and the rest are on land?
We had brought up the idea of a "crab-off" before, but again, didn't do more than that. That certainly could be a fun deal. Do you have contacts or information that could help look into the idea?
Skein- Sounds like a good time, and a great safety idea! Not sure of the logistics of it. Would you be willing to look into that?

Re: Newport OTC event- in case of weather...
Oh, I see how this is going to go. I've seen this many, many times. Any good ideas out there? Great! Thanks for volunteering. Make it happen! I'll tell ya what Nalu. I'll wait a bit and see if anyone "in the know" on this chimes in. If not, I'll be happy to try to chase down some info for ya.
OK, the Jetty Fishery sponsors the crab derby. They are holding theirs June 9-10 this year. I'm sure if an OTC member talked to someone there, they could at least point you in the right direction.

Re: Newport OTC event- in case of weather...
Ah-Ha!
I'll tell you what.... Let's generate as many ideas as possible, and then we'll see if we can get 1 or 2 people to help out.
The cool thing about Newport this year is that without doubt, people are going to want to be there. The timing is great. The Tourney is on the Saturday following the 4th of July which is on Wed. When better to take a couple days off and spend the the last part of the week at the coast?
In all honesty, I can see a huge contingent of Salty Dogs in the area doing lots of fun things. The fact that Englunds dock sale is that weekend only adds to the fun!
There are going to be sponsors there with boats of all sorts to climb in and take rides on, as well as other cool stuff.
I know Bob is planning to make Astoria a huge event, but Newport is going to start this thing off right! July 7th will be the biggest TA meeting yet!

Instead of Hot Wings, how about some of Dougs special Oysters cooked with his hot Tapatio sauce!
Casting Contest! This is a done deal! We should have had one last year, but didn't. They have this in Cabo and it's a hoot. We'll have one regardless this year.

Re: Newport OTC event- other fun things
Mark I like your crystal ball, where can I get one. I hope the weather
works in our favor. The last 2 years I fished the weekend after the 4th
we did really well out there. We were catching fish inside of area 61 both years.
