A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
To ALL,
I've known about this site for quite sometime now, and chosen to share it with the Salty Dogs.
It is a must read site, if you're truly interested in learning about the Atlantic & Pacific Blue Fin Tuna.
Dr. Block has been the leader for the tagagiant program, and has alot to offer about the torpedo fish of the ocean. Where you can find them, how they travel, satellite images, she knows ALL about these awesome creatures.
Please Read thoroughly thru some of the icons listed on this page I made a link to, they have some awesome information
not found anywhere else in the world.

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Interesting little guy, this Northern Anchovy, soup de jour for the ellusive Bluefin. Here he is in case you want to create a jig or lure that mimicks him:
And a little about him (from various sources):
Grows to 4 in (10 cm). Body slender and elongate but round in cross section. Back is green and sides are silvery, including a stripe along the flank in young individuals. Large head and mouth with a pointed snout.
Pelagic marine species found to depths of 984 ft (300 m). Usually stays in coastal waters within 18.6 mi (30 km) of shore but may range as far as 298 mi (480 km) offshore. Enters estuaries, bays, and inlets during the spring and summer.
Forms schools during most of the year, although these become smaller or break up in late spring, typically around the end of spawning in April or May. Moves to inshore waters during spring and summer and migrates offshore in the fall and winter. Diel migrations also occur, with the northern anchovy remaining at depths during the day and approaching the surface in low-density schools at night.
(especially note references to chlorophyll in the next passage)
Northern anchovy Engraulis mordax, in an upwelling area off the west coast of Baja California, Mexico, had several strategies in response to chlorophyll a distribution and availability. When the pigment was scarce, northern anchovies practically disappeared from the area and they returned to coastal waters when it was abundant. The fish gathered in specific areas where low turbulence mixing and high concentrations of chlorophyll a existed.
Hmmmmm......

We get a few little guys here every summer. For the most part the range seems to be to the south on our coast.
Is there any tagging info on Thunnus Obesus? Bigeye?

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
 Hi,
Search around thru there web site, you may find big eye there. Unsure.
If you look closely in Oct/Nov. there has been a couple of Giant PBFT as far North as Southern OR., Cal. border. These are fish that have been tagged. What about the schools that havn't, I firmly beleive there is
Blue Fin in our waters. You just need to know how to fish them and when
East coast fishermen run our #24 Planers, on either Hand-Lines with a break away system Double sided snap swivel with #64UV Rubber Band.
150ft. leader, with a horse ballyhoo tucked in behind a purple and black sea witch, or a pink and white one.
They also will run a Planer Rod, with the break away system and another rod for there landing rod minimum reel 2 SPEED 80 tiagra
Spool that Rod up with 150lb. momoi battle line. Battle Line breaks at
224lbs. Will uphold the smaller Blue fin in this area.
Also paint the Planer Flat black, clean it off with some white vinegar first.
The paint will adhere and stay on longer.
Just a small tip, I know its all over the place. My instructions that is
I've been offshore and caught Atlantic BFT myself, with this set up.
Presentation must be way back away from the boat. For these fish dont just strike like Albacore, when they take your bait its like a commuter train flying by WHAMMMMMMOOOOOOO. hOLD ONTO YOUR SHORTS.
A harness is a MUST.
Here is our Hand-Line Planer Kit.
And a BFT we caught on a Planer Rod, with a Tiagra130.
and THE EXACT #24 Old Salty Pro Planer Kit

Hey Jim, check these out:

They are 4" long and 2.5 ounces. Very hard to photograph and catch the holographic effect. They are too shiney to use a flash on!
Here you can see some of the effect:

The silver/black back is really close to your 'chovey. Hard to see it but the purple has silver sides as does the green. These are supposed to work great on the slide and they get down faster than a swimbait. Also good for verticle jigging. Half-price as a weekly special at Charkbait this week.

According to the tag map, WA & OR is Novemeber! That would be similar to the N. Carolina fishery as well. Later season and cooler water. May need to postpone winterizing this year hoping to get some calm water for a run.

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Hi,
You're absolutely right about the N. Carolina fishery.
Our fish was caught last November out of Atlantic Beach
N.C. It took 1.5 hours to bring this beast to the boat.
A harpoon is a must, before you land this beast.
I couldn't beleive my eyes, when my brother reeled this thing up from
the depths below. I manned the harpoon, WHAT A RUSH.
Here is a typical meat stick set up for YFT, WAHOO,MAHI, on the east coast. I firmly beleive this set up can bring up a smaller BFT, but not a lg. monster.
This is a Planer Rod/Tiagra80 2speed reel.
Complete rigging instructions
With our #24 Planer on the bench, painted black
http://www.wahoonbox.com/videos/SNIPER.wmv
I hope you enjoy rhis full rigging instructions.
It is top notch, with all information.
It will take a while to download, but they are truly awesome,
and a must see. FULL RIGGING VIDEO.
P.S. We're going to start to make and market our very own
Old Salty Planer Rod
We will post when we're in production

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Todd Box runs a #24 but remember GBFT fishing back east is predominatly done in less than 220 Ft. of water the west coast blues seem to be out deeper, I use to fish Fleming Bank with my dad when I was a kid and we chummed and chunked right on the ridge I have seen bluefin off our coast but right on top usually on the feed busting top bait last personnell sighting was our last el nino year early october on the finger of the east edge of the Astoria canyon not monsters but easy 50 to 100# fish!!!PEACE

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Down in Cowtown, we would always run a bait on a diver., 200lb mono to a 5ft section of nylon boat rope(which is used to attach the planer mono line to the boat cleat) we would use about 40-50ft of line. first we would drop the live bait back about 25 ft behind the boat, and attach it a few ft above the planer on the mono leader, of course we used those trustworthy #64lb office depot rubberbands, these are your typical brown rubberbands. Now we would drop the planer and bait at the same time, No reason to have a planer rod, its one addional rod to deal with. A good deckhand with gloves can pull up 50' of planer line with a planer in plane in under a minute, and thats with the boat doing 8+ knots upon hookup. Its not a easy task. If your fortunate enough to hookup to a giant tuna, there is no room for error.

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Box will tell you himself the Death from above Planer setup is NOT for GBFT. Most common are school size Tuna, Wahoo, and Mahi such. So, great for albacore and smaller stuff.and

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Hi,
WAHOONBOX (aka Marty Hiatt) Morehead City, N.C.
Runs a #16 Old Salty Planer on the sniper rod for
Wahoo, Yellow Fin,Mahi Mahi, and even King Mackeral.
On the DFA Planer Rod he runs a #24 Old Salty Planer
Painted Flat Black. HE USES THE PLANER ROD AS A
DOWNRIGGER/MEAT STICK WITH A BREAK AWAY
#64RUBBER BAND. And another rod with a 130 reel on it
for his fishing rod when he runs for BFT.
The Planer Rod can act as a meat stick with a bridle, or a Downrigger
for Giant BFT. What is good about the Planer Rod, is if you're using it as a downrigger, you could pull it out of a gunnel rod holder or swivel based holder if you have a fish on another line over that area.
YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH A DOWNRIGGER. Also running it as a meat stick, with the bridle, you dont have to pull it out of the rod holder when reeling the fish in.
Check out this video
http://www.sportfishermen.com/movies/fishing_videos/196
And here is a video GBFT FISHING THE PLANER ROD WITH A BREAK AWAY
RUBBERBAND WITH ANOTHER PLANER ROD .
http://www.wahoonbox.com/videos/bft05.wmv
http://www.wahoonbox.com/videos/planertrip.wmv
The other way to run this set up inexpensively is with the
300#mono HANDLINE 100 ft long #24 Old Salty Planer with a break away as Zodiac Fisherman explains, #64 rubber band with a double sided coastlock snap swivel as your drop down breakaway. Make sure you have an egg bead crimped 2ft. above the planer on your hand line to prevent your rod line from tangling with the planer.
WHEN THE FISH STRIKES, THE BAND WILL BREAK AWAY FROM THE PLANER HANDLINE, AND ITS JUST YOU AND THE FISH. Its that easy With 100ft. of 300#mono handline out with a #24 Old Salty Planer you will be down 50-60ft. at high speed.
Ratio is 2to 1.
Also WHEN RUNNING FOR BFT, RUN A 150FT. LEADER BEHIND THE BOAT!
BFT ARE VERY FINICKY.
Marty is a good friend of mine, and is the designer of the
the DFA/Sniper Rod. We go back many years, or should I say
my family and alot of the Morehead City BFT fleets go back along time.
Mid. 80's
If you're interested in more videos, PM me.
And I'll send you the links.
There is much to learn when trolling for giants.
We also have full instructions/diagrams on how to rig the hand line.

Looks like another call to chalkshark. Thanks crabbait!
Very interesting watching the "bite me yellowfin" video and the salty planer video. I didn't know you could remove the planer midfight? Thats the ticket!
Also noticed in the yellowfin video the daisy chains they were using. Pink!

Re: A MUST READ-Learn about the Pacific BFT, and yes even in OR.
Hi.
Pink & white daisy chains are popular on the east coast, but so are green& chartreuse chains. Purple & black also.
It all has to do with the clarity of the water, and what the fishermans lucky chain is.
