Youth Outdoor Day set for June 2nd

It's time once again to mark your calendars and sign up your kids for the 5th Annual Oregon Ducks Unlimited Youth Outdoor Day. It is set for June 2, 2007 and is once again being held at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area located between Corvallis and Monmouth.

While it is coordinated by the Salem Dusky chapter of Ducks Unlimited, many organizations have joined together to create this opportunity for kids to learn about habitat conservation, hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors.

It is DU organized but each group involved runs an activity related to their area of interest such as: Habitat tours, sporting clays clinic, decoy painting, fish printing, wood duck box building & bird house construction, critter display, turkey calling & turkey hunting, fly casting & fly tying , canine training & demonstrations, predator calling class, waterfowl calling/banding, elk calling, fishing derby, no trace camping, marine corp obstacle course, archery course, army rock wall climbing, hunter safety class overview, junior boating program, sensory safari, wildlife id and wilderness survival & preparedness.

This event is not meant to be a fundraiser. It is strictly for the kids to learn about the outdoors. In fact, thanks to generous sponsors the cost has once again been set at only $5 per person (adults and kids) which includes all activities, lunch, *t-shirt, *raffle prize and *goody-bag (*for youth only).

Registration closes May 24, or after the first 600 kids are registered, whichever comes first. Please note that this is expected to be a SELL OUT event.

This is a great way to spend the day as a family and/or to expose kids to the outdoors who might not have an interest in hunting or fishing (yet).

I want to take my kids to this event but I am not sure if they are old enough yet. Is there any age requirements? I'm sure some of the events wouldn't be age appropriate but others would be great to teach about waterfowl and the outdoors.

I took my boys last year and they were 8 & 3. The 3 year old got tired, but had a blast. This is great event to get the kids started on the outdoors. I highly recommend it!

My daughter and I will be there. She is pretty excited after reading about all the activities they have planned. She also needs another painted deke for her collecton.

Eric, What are the hours? I didn't see them on the web site. Also, do you need early registration for adults? A friend of mine wants to go, but she is not sure about her work schedule as of yet.

The activities start at around 8am and run until about noon so it's strictly a morning thing. It's spread around the EE Wilson WMA with kids moving from activity to activity of their choosing. Some activities have a wait while others are just walk up and do. I'd definitely recommend you get there on the early side as some activities in the past have had a sign up sheet. As for age, there are activities suitable for all sizes but most activities are geared toward elementary kids. I seem to recall the minimum age for the sporting clays was 11 or 12.

There is also a fishing derby to participate in that day so they certainly have that option if they get bored with rock climbing, archery, turkey calling, decoy painting, etc.

Registrations are well ahead of last year's pace so get them signed up.

BTW... If any of you have an interest in helping out at this event it's pretty easy work and the smiles are worth every bit of effort. Just let me know and I'll get you set up.

A post in another thread reminded me to point out that this is a perfect event for a boy/girl scout troop. In fact there are a few troops that come each year. If you have a kid in scouts, sign them up and invite the whole troop, den, pack or herd.

Gonna try and get my boy and I (or his mom, depending on work schedule) there. He just recieved his Hunter's Safety Certificate and has already been on his first "real" hunt. A turkey hunt that was VERY fun, but not succesful.

Some of us will be there volunteering for the Oregon Marine Board and the Junior Boating program - make sure you say howdy - should be fun - I think were doing life jacket races - run down - put on the right size life jacket - run back
