Default Ocean Survival Training - by USCG

This information might be of interest to some of you.

The Tuesday Statesman Journal had an article stating, in part…

“Recreational sailors and power boaters are eligible to participate in one-day or two-day classes this spring that are designed to prepare scientists, commercial fisherman and others who work at sea to survive the worst of what the marine environment can throw at them.”

“The training is organized by the Oregon State University Sea Grant Extension program and will be taught by the U.S. Coast Guard.”

Topics appear to include EPIRBS, flares, emergency communication, and an assortment of safety equipment.
The one day instruction is designed for (those) … who work at sea, but who likely have not had the formal training available to commercial fishermen. This is a less-intense version of the two-day course, but it still covers what they need to know to survive an emergency.

The two-day class, taught by four USCG instructors, prepares crew members for emergencies and gives them hands-on experience working with a variety of safety equipment and procedures, from abandoning ship, to how to don and wear the insulated immersion suits meant to keep capsized crew alive and afloat in frigid water.

Here is the link to the March 6th, Statesman Journal article (a portion of it), “Boating safety class might save your life”, and information about dates, cost, and registration.

Thanks for catching that, KC. I went through the course put on by the Clatsop Community College Marine Science Department, but I think Janis and I will go to this one as a refresher. Something like this could easily mean the difference between making it back or becoming a statistic.

Here's the outline and contact info:

Be safe at sea

WHAT: Boating safety classes intended for commercial fisherman and marine scientists who work at sea, but are also open to recreational boaters.

SHORT COURSE: One-day classes designed for researchers, student research assistants and others will take place Wednesday, April 14, May 14, May 31 and June 20 in Newport. Registration is required, along with a $25 nonrefundable deposit.

LONG COURSE: Two-day classes designed for commercial fishermen are scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Newport and March 20-21 in Tillamook. Registration is required, along with a $50 deposit, which is refundable on completion of the course.

REGISTRATION: Contact Kaety Hildenbrand at the Lincoln County Extension office in Newport at (541) 574-6537, Ext. 27 or at Kaety.Hildenbrand@oregonstate.edu
