Default saturday springer fishing

I had the pleasure of fishing with Waterdog today. You can tell this guy is an engineer, he brought 2 mechanical pencils with him to punch his tag with.

We started off by Coon Island, and worked out way down towards ST Helens. We fished the mouth of the Slough for a while and then up the main Columbia a mile or two on the Washington side. We saw a total of 4 springers caught and hundreds of boats like us with nadda.

We finally gave up on springers and plunked smelt. The sturgeon fishing was fast and furious. It wasnt but a minute or two between fish, we even had doubles on. We ended up with 2 keepers and lots of shakers. We only kept one of the keepers. When we ran out of smelt and switched to herring, the bite just flat stopped. I guess they didnt much care for the herring.

Great day, just springerless.

Just to add to the Saturday theme I fished with my Dad and a good friend below Catlamet today. Picked up one with an extra fin which was released unharmed (pulling herring) and had 3 big takedowns on Kwikfish that didn't stick, ultrasticky hooks and all. I must have been the only one to hook a nate as we saw 8 or 10 other fish caught that all received a swift smack and into the fish box they went. Seems like its getting better.
Good luck and tighth lines, Jeff

Hi Bait, thanks for the report, to bad about the spingerless fishing. Your batting average needs a pick-me-up since your still running a little low. At least your out trying. With all those trips your running the odds are with you. You also should let Waterdog know that he should use a pen when tagging fish. I've been warned by a game officer not to use a pencil. Now that I said this, tried unsuccessfully checking in the regs for this. Couldn't find anything that states you have to use a pen. Maybe he just didn't like my writing. Anyone ever hear of this?

oh well,

hook

I have...supposed to use a pen so you can't erase your entries. Hmmmm........imagine that!! I know I've read it somewhere.

Bait your a real piece of work but I won't go to that. Had a alot fun on our trip and I hope we can do it again.....well maybe.....

As for the pencil: I have always used a pencil and never has any game cops said a word about it. A pencil is way more reliable than a damn pen. You try and make a pen work when it's 30 degrees outside. At least I didn't have a straight edge or a scale with me. Dividers on the other hand is a different story!

BTW the Sturgeon is smokin' as we speak.

Just looked got back, neighbors are butchering a sturg and have two springers in the cooler. They were fishing from the bank at Bonneville. They were fishing for sturg and hooked 3 springers. Got two of them to the bank. Hooked 8 sturg and kept one because of the springers they already had. What a day huh?

BOE,

Thanks sooo much for the sturg. tip!!!! I took my Girlfriend out salmon fishing today in the channel (which pretty much sucked). We gave up, and fished down by the end of the channel. We got a keeper a peice and lots O' shakers. Thanks for sharing, It made our day. It was her first time catching sturg, and on salmon gear, she had a blast. (Well I had a blast too, but I think she had waaaay more fun than I did):0

All I can find in the 2001 regulations is on page 8 which states: "It is unlawful to alter entries on tags or licenses and to possess an altered tag or license." I suspect that the "warning" to use a pen was more of a suggestion to minimize temptation to make a future alteration!

hookset, to my knowledge there is no law stating you have to use a pen to record your catch. I would assume that your pencil has an eraser and that should be enough said. If you are checked again ask the enforcement officer about it. Iam sure he/she will be glad to tell you if it is in fact a law but iam betting on 27 years of experience it is not. If iam wrong you can beat me with a nightcrawler for 15 mins.LOL
