I have been busy with spring bear preperation also...As you know it is reloading season and I have been busy with that...I have my brother bunches of 7-08 loaded up with 140 acubonds...

I have been trying to decide which rifle to take...I have a springfield 06 that has never been in the woods...I really need to get it out sometime..

I have a new load worked up in my 270 with 140 accubonds..It makes a excellant cross canyon gun..

But I will probably take my 338-06...I also have a new load for it...57 1/2 gr of win 748 is pushing 180 gr accubonds at just over 3000 fps into tiny little groups...I took it up yesterday and played with the Burris ballisticplex scope and the aiming dots were matching up about perfect with that load..

On top of all that I have also been keeping up on my recurve shooting...I have a heavily timbered ridge road in mind with a lot of roadside grass..A evening sneak along there may get me a chance for a stalk to get into recurve range...

And on top of all that, LOL, I have started to get the goats out and get the winter sleep out of their legs...Need to get those boys back in shape..

Its going to be a great bear season...;I can feel it in my bones...

As a side note,I just saw my first buzzard of the year...I don't ever remember seeing one this early ....Buzzards coming back and bear coming out happen about the same time each year...Last year bad weather made the first couple weeks of season kinda slow going..

I take the buzzard sighting as a good omen and predict a hot opener on the coast...

Santiam and I went out shed hunting Saturday. Covered quite a few miles and found a few sheds. We even stumbled onto a herd of horses out in the middle of nowhere. It is a great way to prep the legs for long days of bear hunting. We saw quite a bit of new grass sprouting up....Robins are singing in the morning......and now the vulture......bear season is close, very close.....

Speaking of vultures...I saw one between Corvallis and Monmouth on 99 today. It was sitting in a field right next to the road getting some grub.

I'm new to spring bear hunting but have bear hunting fever and drew a tag this year. Eastern Oregon, Pinecreek/Keating/Cathrine Creek.

Do you come across more bears in the spring then in the fall?

Are they usually in good condition for mounting?

Way more. Yes, except by late season many will have started to rub.

I disagree with Beamerfish..At least on the coast, i believe you can have many more sightings in the fall...The food sources are more concentrated and the bears are surely using them.. I could show you a bear anyday in the fall in Southern Oregon, sometimes it takes a few days to find them in the spring...Over east, i do believe you can see more in the spring..

I meant eastside - should have been more clearer. I don't know nothing about west side bears (but am willing to learn).

I think bears are easier to find in the spring,at least on the central coast where I hunt....They are eating grass, and wheres the grass.?..Out in the open..In April everything is still died down from winter..The leaves are off,the stickers are down, the high grass and thistles are gone...The opposite hillside is very visable...Come the middle of May and the leaves come on and NOTHING is visable...

In the fall, when the berries are on,the bears are in the berries, and the berries are at the top of their growth...Maple saplings hide most everything else....There are spots that you can see,but it is nothing like April..

I saw 25 bear last spring...4 in the fall season...Of course I hunted more in the spring but I LIKE SPRING...

Took the goats out and put some miles on them today...More spring bear preperation...

the tri-tone i saw a few years ago would be nice. it should be up to 350lbs by now, or the jet black one i missed several years ago, i think he is still around, should be about 500lbs

I saw 8 last September and I only saw 2 all spring. I only had to hunt one day though, this year I will be a little more picky.
Can't wait, loaded a couple boxes of 06 and I have been hitting the stairmaster 5xweek.
Good luck to all
Tony
