Default Setting up a new boat

Got a call from North River. My boat is done. Going to pick it up the end of next week. I need to go buy all of the required PFD's, safety equipment, anchor, anchor puller, rod holders, net, and other stuff. Pretty much need it all. I have looked at FMS, GI Joes, and the trusty Cabelas catalog. Any other recommendations as to where to look/buy? I thought I had heard someone mention West Marine once.

Lets hear from the veteran boaters out there. What Any suggestions as to cool stuff I might need?

I feel like it's a week til Christmas. I can hardly stand it.

Bill

I feel your pain , baby

I'd buy one thing from each place just to make it more fun

Actually places like WalMart have good prices on some of the required (unfun) stuff, like flares, paddles, horns, etc. West Marine has more class act stuff, as far as expensive fasteners in brass, stainless, bronze and high quality 'Yacht' grade lines and ropes.

For straight 'fishin'' related add ons..I have to give the nod to GI Joes. FMS has a better selection, but Joes just keeps beating them price-wise.

You'll complain about how much you had to spend on all that stuff...and love every minute of it! Have Fun!!!

Boater,
In your honor, I had to get a sportjet But I guess that has all been covered on the legendary North River thread.

When I picked up my boat from NW jet they supplied all the life vest and safety gear needed to outfit the boat.See what North River will do for you. With the profit margine on boats today you might get most of it from them at no cost.especially if you let them know that other boat makers are doing this.Good luck and good fishing in your new (love)I mean boat. True I don't have a Joes or Fishermans nearby but Cabellas knows me by my first name and their prices and warranty can't be beat. Give them a try.

Congrats on your new boat BR! With only a week away, you're probably not going to find most of the items you need on sale. When I ordered my last boat, I started shopping for all the extra's right away. Found the best sales, deals and had everything purcahsed before the boat arrived. The one room looked like a small marine store.

I purcashed the PFD's from Boaters World catalog, better selection and price for qualitiy PFD's. Rod holders, Scotty's on sale at FMS. Electronics, never did find a real decent price, Cabela's for fishfinder, VHF, antenna and compass. Found a great GPS with map at Jantzen Beach Boaters World, $100 discount on sale. I'd ask both Boaters World or West Marine if they offer a discount
if you purchased all your boating equipment from them. You never know, never hurts to ask. Oh yeah, purchased the Scotty downriggers out of Canada, better price with the exchange rate. Order over the phone with credit card. Saved enough money to buy the black box.

best of luck,

hook

I have been picking a few things up over the past couple of months. GI Joes has had some good sales. Still have quite a bit to buy. I am sure glad I budgeted about twice what I thought I would have to spend for all the misc stuff.

Make sure if you are going to anchor in heavy current you get 300' feet of rope. If you get a big anchor buy some heavy chain about 6-7 feet long. It keeps the anchor down in current so it doesn't drag. Also if you like jumping wakes and things, make sure you get and anchor holder, mine hit the windshield once! I built my anchor and holder and it works pretty good. It is getting rusty though. I just got a spool gun for my welder, so I'll be making another holder out of aluminum. Have fun and be carefull!

I just have to make this point since Fear no fish mentioned fish-on rod holders. The past 3 boats all had fish-on's. Problem is the teeth that lock into the bracket start rounding off over time. The fit becomes very sloppy. The empty holders start rattling when this happens........trolling with a low idle is the worse. I've now switched to the scotty rod holders, larger teeth and bigger bite......plus more of them. So far, looking very good and I've noticed lots of people seemed to have switched to the Scotty holders.

just my couple cents worth,

hook

Good point Hookset,
I actually run a couple of scotty's off the rear of my boat. Fish on rod holders also don't hold my sturgeon rods very well either.
Cabela's has quite a collection of their own.
I like the idea of being able to get a quick hookset like some of their models. 2 more nights of graveyard shift, then I will get to spank the Wind springers again for the next 2.5 weeks.

Hi Ron,
4 days, 2 fish. 18 and 15 pounds. I've been through some baaaaad weather. I caught the 15 in what seemed like 5 foot waves. Quite a challenge to net my own fish in that chit! Herring seems to be providing the most action but I caught mine on Mag-Warts. Reba Macintyre was the hot color for me. (Flourescent red with silver specks) Will see you down there Tuesday. Look for my boat, it says FEAR NO FISH! on the sides.
