Default Cars from California..?

My wife and I are looking at buying a used car and have run into one that we like, except I am a little hesitant because the car is originally from California.

I remember hearing at one time that the smog componenets on the cars registered in Cali are a problem here...

Maybe I am just dreaming, but any advice about cars from California would be much appreciated.

Dan

I dno't know for sure but California used to have the toughest smog control laws in the country. If the car was purchased new there, it should be good in any of the 50 states.

It's also the level of equipment that Gov "Tax and Gouge me" wants in Oregon vehicles.

It is not a problem, unless altered.

Are you worried it won't pass Or. smog tests? Ca. has the strictest laws in the country so that shouldn't be an issue. Personally I'd rather have a car not originate from Ca. due to all the smog equipment it has on it. Not unless the other states have followed suit over the years.

When I was in NJ I wanted to trade in my Suburban (Ca. car) and the dealer even mentioned the smog and people not wanting a Ca. car.

you shouldn't have any problems with it. smog requirements in CA are stricter than anywhere else so that shouldn't be a problem..and, with Cali's mild climates the vehicle should be fre of any sort of rust or undbody corrosion that you might find on cars in moister states.

That is exactly what I am talking about. What is it about the smog stuff that makes the car undesireable...? Fuel economy, reliability... .

That really is the heart of my original question.

I don't know what it's like anymore in terms of performance/mpg but it used to be that smog equipment hindered both. With new technologies I'm not sure if they've over come those issues. Also not sure how strict other states have become over the years with their own requirements. Could be that they are all similiar? You might want to go to your mechanic or even a dealer who makes the car you are interested in buying. How old is the car? Maybe that's the key. Newer the better?

We bought a Cali. car years ago, I think it was our Plymouth Arrow, the prob was, If and when clean air components go bad it costs alot more to replace them, as they are not standard equipment in these parts....YET.

It may have changed over the years, and there may not be THAT big of a diiference today as there was back then.

As I recall, you don't absolutly have to get a Cali. car from Cali., ours was purchased new from a dealership in Utah.

If you buy a car from California won't it just drive the price up of all the cars in Oregon????? Don't do it.

Just kidding I have bought and brought several cars previously registered in Ca. No problems. Just change the plates quikly though because Oregonians I heard don't like anything from California......except their money.
