Cell phone question

My wife and I are still with ATT.We want to upgrade to better phones.Including camera.If we do it through our provider we have to sign a new agreement and switch to Cingular.We dont want to do that.

Can I buy phones off Ebay or the like and just put my sims card in it? Do I have to make sure the phone is compatible.If so how do I know?

you should be able to. i have bought phones off ebay and used them on verizon with no problem just call att and ask them
