Retenone?
I am doing a report for school and wondering what you guys thought about the use of Retenone to kill off both native and non-native species before restocking with hatchery trout? Thanks for you help. Tight-Lines-Trout4lb.

Re: Retenone?
I think it is Rotenone, Trout. There is an article on the front page of ifish about it, and you can do some research on it at ODFW. Alot of fuss going on about Rotenone in Diamond Lake.

Re: Retenone?
Yep Jen, rOtenone. It can be a useful tool for management in cases where lakes have been over-run by undesirables. (Wish they had a people version). But there are risks associated with it. The places Jennie mentioned would be a good place to start, also the library. Depending on what kind of detail you want, you may even consider going to OSU library to look through their fishery section -- not sure what level in school you are or anything.
As far as what I THINK about it...if it's used appropriately its a good tool. The literature is full of examples where it was used inappropriately though. Overall, I think enough is known about it now that it can be used safely and effectively. The question of whether it SHOULD be used is a whole 'nother ball of wax...I don't have a problem with it in Diamond Lake, but I might somewhere else. It just depends.

Re: Retenone?
Trout4lb, I work for a environmental engineering/consulting firm and therer are staff in the office that are fisheries biologists, etc. In short Rotenone affects fish in a similar way as Arsenic does humans, it effects the central nervous system (CNS) and does not allow for the generation of ATP or ADP, pretty much instant death. The idea of Rotenone was to eliminate all fish and then reintroduce the species of interest. Used in great quantities in the 60's and 70's. Some problems with it is that it will not kill eggs, so you can have a quick re-introduction of the "bad" species. To combat this dredging was used, which itself causes problems. Other issues include Nutrification or Algae blooms, and predatation of the dead fish by birds of prey. Send me a private message, if you would like other details.

Re: Retenone?
You might also go to www.Google.com and do a search. There's a ton of stuff on the internet and Google returns thousands of hits. This should provide a lot of good background info on other uses as well.
