Talking Noob too flyfishing

Hey everyone this is my first post. I got hooked on fly fishing last year and there was no turning back. I have mostly only fly fished lakes for trout, but tried steelhead, with no success. Last summer i caught some really nice cutthroats on the Wilson river. Is there a season when you can fish for them or is it year round. I know its catch and release, but i am dying to get out and do some trout fishing.. any suggestions of somewhere between north coast to central oregon? Thanks and love the site!

yes there is a season when you can fish for cutts I know it starts in the spring check the regs for exact dates. as for river fishing this time of year you need to go east or south the Mackenzie can be good this time of year as long as it does not blow out. The crooked can be good lots of fish fewer trout then in years past. and then there is the old stand by the Deschutes gotta love that river I hope to be making it over there in the next few weeks keep and eye out for an open seat. ohh and don’t forget the Metoulios (sp) is also a good winter fishery hope this helps rp

Hi Ela welcom to Ifish. There is a season for them and I know you prolly know this but you can consult the regs real easy. There are however a few year round streams in Eastern Oregon such as Crooked and deshutes in certain sections unless the regs have changed but the lakes are a blast too, i do that too and I love it. A great lake in the somewhat near area is Laurance Lake on the east side of mnt hood. It offer excelent trout fishing from year to year. No bait allowed as well so try that as we move into spring. I recommend a cat raft or small car topper boat. Winds can pick up in after noon.

i've read alot about the Metolius and would really like to try it there. But sounds like the drive could be a bit bad this time of year.

Yes Ela that one is open too right now but I bet your right about the drive. That is prolly the best winter stream these days for trout because the bulls stay in all winter after they follow the kokanee up there in the fall. Also the crooked river is rumored to be failing as a fishery sadly.
