Big pig, big bass made my weekend pass (pics)
It was an adventurous weekend, to say the least. Turkey season in Texas begins in about a month and I've been patterning the birds regularly at one of my go-to spots.
Buddy and I drove into the property Friday morning (classes had been canceled...woo hoo!) and walked within about 120 yards of the oak trees the turkeys have been roosting. As the early morning light creeped through the trees the birds started talking and a few popped out of the trees to begin their morning routine, which would have involved walking 20 yards in front of us.
My plan was to film them. I say "was" because as I was pulling the video camera out to record I was surprised to hear a BOOM! My buddy, sitting 10 yards away, couldn't pass up on a nice coyote walking by.
Dang. The oak trees erupted with 10-20 pound jennies, jakes, and toms. After a "what the heck were you thinking?" look I grabbed his rifle so he wouldn't spoil the day any further. I walked to the roost to check out the scat and down feathers. Yeah, they were here. In numbers. But, I know they'll be back...we've got month till turkey season.
Five minutes fly by and I hear a strange squeal. Then again. And again. Before my mind could process what the sound was, I was pleasantly surprised to see 15 piglets and two 150lb hogs and a huge sow...actually it was more like somebody jabbed a triple dose syringe full of adrenaline into my jugular.
They trotted along the creekbed, not sensing me, about 40 yards away. One shot in the lungs later, the sow fell!
After some yipping and hooting, we grabbed a Cabelas game scale rated up to 320 pounds. Well, she maxed out the scale and we didn't even get her head and shoulder off the ground...so this little hog tipped in at about 350.
Hog jerky is currently on the smoker and WHOO it smells good. Of course, a 120 pounder prolly would taste a bit better.
Then to cap the weekend off I fished a local legend of a lake. Threw a black spinner bait over some hydrilla and landed this beaut!
Not bad for a weekend when I should have been studying.

what are those things on your legs in the picture of you and the fish?? they are kinda like pants but not as long. I don't see anybody wearing those here in Klamath Falls. Must be some sort of....wait a minute!!! They are shorts!!! I saw some of those last summer!! Nice fish, and good job on that hog!

Brownwood, eh? Or you could just let me put you ON the turkeys in Abilene.
...and yeah yeah folks, its 83 degrees today. Mmmmmm. Bass'll be spawning before too long...its already too hot to wear much camo when hunting. Hope you're all enjoying the snow/rain/sleet.

Oh...your tempting me now!.....But, One trip down will have to do me.
Love that big ol bucketmouth too. What'd it weigh?...I'm gonna say 5.5..maybe 6lb????
That is what I love about TX...the combo hunts.
Critters in the morning and bass in the afternoon.
Love the pics man. Keep it up and enjoy, you'll remember these days for the rest of your life.

Re: Big pig, big bass made my weekend pass (pics)
what kind of rifle did you shoot it with? i hear pigs are really tough and that if you shoot to far forward they have a really thick shoulder pad that will stop a bullet from doing much damage, true?

Re: Big pig, big bass made my weekend pass (pics)
30-06 ...the shoulder plate is extremely tough not to mention the grossly thick skin and grime...there was over 2inches of grime/fat around the shoulders.
