Default Nasty Rumor of Springer Closure

I almost hate to post this because it's JUST A RUMOR but I heard from a friend of mine who fished the lower Columbia today that they may shut the mainstem of the Columbia down to 3 days a week. He said he heard it from a "semi-reliable" source - a gillnetter who is constantly in touch with the ODFW re: regulations. I just thought I'd put a feeler out to see if anyone else had heard anything about this. My friend said that most of the guys in the hogline he was in had heard the same thing.

This had darn well better be a RUMOR. I'm fishing the Willamette tomorrow, but you can bet I'll be on the phone when I get back to find out if this is indeed a possibility.

ODFW reports if it is in fact a banner year they may up the limit to three.

Whoopi... Considering it will be a 10 to 3 ratio of nates to hatchery. It will take a full day to muster up 3 fin clippers.

If you check the ODFW reports section under Columbia Zone. It says the season will stay open in the columbia till April 30. But, It also says that: It may limit the days open in order to keep the season open that long. Double Edge sword. I'd rather fish the mainstem till the end of April 3 days a week rather than quit in two weeks. I'm sure retirees and shift workers feel otherwise.

Killertaylor,

I have heard something like that as well. Let me see if I can recite what I've heard... Once the "Tangle Nets" go in around Mid-April, we will probably expect to see a 3-Day a week fishery on the Columbia, below Bonneville, as a result. This I have heard from a pretty reliable source...But only time will tell. I have also heard that these nets will be in the river for a month(?) Unfortunately, we are ALL in the dark with regards to the ODFW/WDFW and what their grand plans will be.

Thanks, gang. I know two of the gillnetters who drew the experimental small mesh/tangle net permits and both of them think they won't get to fish more than a week - they are still in the dark too and think it may be later in April when they finally get to give it a shot. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see.
