My first was a Stevens Fox. Not real fancy but not real expensive either. It's a great gun and has put a lot of birds in the freezer. Currently I shoot a Berreta. I read that Ruger might come out with a side by side. If they do I would look it over real close.

Ah, I settled for just a Franchi Alcione, for only an even thousand. I hope its ugliness does not blind anyone.

I have a little DeHaan 20 Ga ... one of the old S2 Models with a single trigger and the 100% full scroll work.

It is a swell gun, and cost me about $800 brand spanking new.

Even comes with 5 chokes.

I sure like it.

I picked up a 20ga Browning sXs at a gun show; seller had action zipped closed so I asked to see the bores he opened it;; waved by my eyes and I asked if he would clean them for a look past the dust/crud. He shut it up zipped it again and said it was in excellent condition. I wanted it even though it had 1 1/2 " off the stock. I paid him 625 as I remember.
Lesson learned; when I cleaned the bores one tube had two pits; I was bummed but decided to send it off to Stan (someone) in Seattle to have it back bored which cleaned it out thankfully. I put a leather butpad on it to cover the ugly extention Now I'm glad I picked it up.

But be careful of gunshow tied down actions they should allow bore inspections freely.Good luck

I've been buying, selling, collecting, trading SxSs for thirty years. There's no smoother shooting shotgun ever devised. 625 for a BSS .20 in that condition is about right - maybe a little over but not much. Visit the Browning www and see by serial number when it was made. I found one NIB in Louisiana that I paid 1750. Browning make a very few BSS .20s with a silver receiver. I only know where one is located. I once owned a left handed Woodward (yep there is a left handed double. The tag opens to the left) and sold it. Big mistake. James Purdy bought out Woodward as he was Purdy's biggest competitor at the time. Mine was No. 2 of a matched pair, left handed and, judging from all engraved game bird indigenous to the U.S., made for an American client. 2.5 inch chambers. In today's market, that Woodward would be worth about 45 to 50 grand. Big BIG mistake. Sometimes I hate myself.

I have an LC Smith 20 gauge side by each with double triggers. I have hunted with it and killed doves and even geese back in the lead shot days.

Those old school doubles with the skinny forearms take some getting used to.

If you like side by side, but like a more meaty forend, the Winchester Model 21 was a very popular gun that wasn't real pricey.

You can get a Parker for a lot less than $49,000. Why you would want to is another subject. Most Americans find the transition from their auto/pump gun to an O/U is easier to make. Ignoring the twin barrels takes a minute.

For a reasonable new SxS for between $2500 and say $5000, look to the Spanish guns like Arrieta, Aya, Grulla or, for a lot less money, the Ruger Gold Label.

The older American guns like Fox, Ithaca, Parker and L.C. Smith had a lot of drop at the heel and comb. Most of us these days are used to nuzzling a cheek into the comb, not balancing our chin on it.

If you want a real education in SxS shotguns, pick up a copy of the quarterly publication The Double Gun Journal at Barnes and Noble. The are easy to spot with the chocolate brown cover and gold leaf. Copies run about 13.00 an issue but they are worth it for the photography alone.

I sure love my sxs's. The warmth of the barrels during a good dove shoot is a nice reminder you are alive! Double triggers, an english grip and splinter forearm are as close to heaven as you can get with a shotgun.

I shoot an Ithaca 100 in 20 gauge. It's a light, good handling double for bird hunting.

Somebody mentioned that it might have more drop. I think this one has more drop than the CZ Mallard I used to have, but that can be a good thing.

I have several sxs shotguns and love each one. I have an old 311 12ga savage that is a clunker, heavy and ugly. but I can hit with it and it was handed down to me. A fox, savage 311 in .410 (can you say wheelbarrow loads of dead starlings), a savage 411 12ga, stoeger 12ga, and an ithaca 16 ga. There is something about a sxs that sparks memories. I have a couple of autos, but reach for a sxs everytime.

Yea I miss mine I had a la fever 16 guage and a gaylif 12guage and I split the barrels on the sweet 16 and the 12 I traded for a 44 mag super black hawk. dumbest move I ever made. I really should have wore a helmet more LOL. Now I got that upland bug again. Took a 20 year break from it and Im just plum worn out on waterfowl. Sick of lines, and blinds. anyway the kid and I nailed a few grouse this year just goofing off and cooked them up with a few fresh picked chantrels and before you knew what happened we both got the bug. German shorthair pointer pup is on the way it'll be hear on the 30th!! And Im going to train up and upland dog. I grew up hunting with Grandpa over his well trained english setters chassing woodcock and grouse all over the Michigan woods Everyone had a SXS shot gun I miss those days. So My boy is like "Dad Let just do it" Im 14 and I want to hunt before you get any fatter and older!! Dang Kid. Anyway Call it a mid life crises if you will but Im back In the game. and if any of you guys want to hook up for some upland action give me a shout.

I purchased a Sears sXs 12ga full and mod. It was heavily pitted around the Bbl./ fence area. Bores were perfect. $225 Turned out on closer examination it was made by AYA for Sears. Double triggers; sweet. I removed the heavy brown paint to get to a nice walnut stock; tung oiled it and it is a treasure never to be sold. My wife claims it as hers!??? Good luck

I learned to hunt upland birds on a Stevens side by side 16 gauge that might have cost $75 at the time. Either I was a much better shot in my youth or it was the best shooting gun I've ever owned. I've gone thru semi-autos, several pumps and an O&U and am yearning to find a good fitting SxS. I've been looking for a Ruger Gold Label and have checked Cabelas all the way to Kansas City without success. Some day...
