Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Okay Salty Dogs.... I need your input. I am shopping for some new gear because some low life people ( I can't really type what I want to say! ) broke into our house in Seaview around New Years. They cleaned us out pretty good.... the typical electronics from the house were taken the first the night. Yes, that's right, the first night. They came back and found the keys to our garage and took our tools and fishing reels. Good news is that our insurance is taking care of us and nothing was taken that can't be replaced (except my dad's underwear.... now you know the type of people we are dealing with...).
Anyway, I want to pick up the Avet EX 4/0 2 Speed Reel. I will be using it for TUNA! and halibut mostly. I haven't been able to get on Charkbait's website all day but another online retailer is offering the reel including 300yds of Spectra backing and my choice of mono top shot. The line choices are:
40# Spectra backing
50# Spectra backing
65# Spectra backing
80# Spectra backing
100# Spectra backing
with the following choices of top shots:
P Line Blue, Big Game Clear or Diamond Blue in
30#
40#
50#
60#
80#
Regardless of where I order it from, what combination of line would you spool it with?
Thanks in advance Salty Dogs!!
Anthony

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
If the other site matches Charkbaits closeout price of $319 than you should be good. I just ordered one with 500 yards of 65# Spectra and no top shot - making my own. If you decide to have them do the top shot I'd go with 40# or 50#. I'll be running 50#. There will be other opinions

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Hay Anthony, sorry to hear about the break-in.
I have two of the EX 4/0; one narrow and one standard (wide).
You want either 65 or 80 spectra for halibut. 65 is kinda nice because it cuts the water better. However, to match up with a tuna topshot 80 is a better match. Because of the thin diameter, you typically put on lighter mono than the spectra backing. Like this:
50 spectra / 30 or 40 mono topshot
65 spectra / 40 0r 50 mono
80 / 50 or 60
135 / 80
On my wide, I have 135 spectra and 80 mono
On the narrow, I have 80 spectra and 60 mono
A warning - if you try to put 65 spectra on the wide, you will need about 800 yards to get the spool diameter where you want it for halibut. I wouldn't even think of putting 65 on the wide. Maybe on the narrow.
Hope this helps!

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Mark nailed it.
I have both the narrow and wide and prefer the narrow.

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
 with what Mark said.
I have 500 yds of 80# spectra and a short(20yds) 60# mono topshot on a narrow. I am goin' to get another EX, just not sure if it will be another narrow or a wide. With some drag mods. I will put 100# hollow spectra and fish 80# topshots.
Anything that requires 65# spectra, I am using LX's and JX's.

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
This is killing me..... $319 is pretty smokin' for such a reel, eh? I've got a narrow and a wide, but think I may have to have another narrow. Yes! I do need another!

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
As mentioned above I would go with a 80lb srectra filled up to allow about a 40yard 60lb mono topshot.

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
John, you could have bought one from Baja Fish Gear yesterday. Narrows for $269 and the wides were $299. I think it was a one day only blow out special I thought about it and decided I need another 60-80# reel like I need a hole in the head right now I am sure some good used ones will come available.

At that price I would have ordered 2 even though they would not be in Purple

Thanks Slabhunter....
This must be a sign from my financial gods... they don't want me to access the darker side of Charkbait. They should know better... I haven't listened to them yet, why start now?

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
No offense meant, but as I read this while chowing down on tuna-bellies-over-rice, don't you think the EX series is a bit of overkill for our peanut to 25# Oregon albacore?
I'm looking forward to using my 4/02s on halibut this year for the cranking power - and it's the first 2-speed reels I've ever had. But for Oregon tuna I'll be reaching for a smaller reel like the MX.

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Gary the MX is a little small for trolling. My style of trolling means after the first hookup you count to 30 and then only slow to 2 or 3 miles a hour. With the 4/0 you most times still have to put it in low gear and as you bring the fish to the boat slowly, the other rods light up as you just pulled Charlie and some of his friends back into your spread and since you are still trolling there are limited tangles

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Yep, the EX makes a great trolling reel. Just hammer the lever drag and drop it into low to turn the herd toward your spread.

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Yea, what Hoggemin said.
These "small" 2 speed reels (yes, they are small for 2 speeds) are real nice when we get into the 30 - 40 lb albacore...which happens just about every year.
If a guy is happy with....immediately stopping the boat when he hooks a fish on the troll and making a big, long fuss over one fish, then sure go with small reels and have a sportin' time. But a lot of us over here...are just a tad greedy and like to hook 3, 4, or 5 fish at a time. 2 speeds with heavier line opens up some options.....and we like options.

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Yeah, like Mark said.
Since I live 150 miles, and over two mountain ranges, away from the coast and with weather like we had last year, I am also a little greedy. I find when the tuna are in the mood I like to hook as many as possible. Yes I like to play them on 30lb line and a light rod; but I start out with the small two speeds (lx or bigger) first and 60lb line. Then when I get to the point where I figure I have paid my expenses I switch to lighter gear.
I blew up two Penn 140 squidders with metal spools trolling for albacore (it cracked the side plate and torqued the frame). I guess 4/0 Avet or a 30 narrow is a little overkill but I don't mind for the first 10 fish. Then I take out the lighter gear. Or if the fish are at 30 miles or less. But If I travel 50-60 miles one way I get a little more serious (greedy).

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Hi Bill!
Blew up your squidders eh? Big surprize
I didn't tell you that....I still use my beloved squidders once in a while. One is a standard, the other has the Newell posts, clamp, & spool....that one be the favorite. But just 20 lb line....no trolling!

Re: Avet EX 4/02 Reel
Just back from a 2400 mile road trip from AZ working and now I see this blowout on these reels-looks like I'll order a narrow with 80#spectra with 50# p-line topshot as 60# is not what they offer. Man now I'll need a new rod to go with any recomends?? Drove 925 miles yesterday what a burn out. Mark

The 80 spectra is probably enough with a 60 top shot.
Recommend Seeker 665 (6'6") or 670 (7'). They are classified as "jig/bait" tuna blanks which just means that they have a sensitive tip and a fast taper to plenty of butt. Rated to 50lbs. I have used mine for everything from halibut and albies up here to sails in Costa Rica and just love it more and more.
A spiral wrapped 670 and an Avet EX04/2 Narrow bouncing 40oz for halibut on a calm day:

Same 670 on a 9' sailfish.

 I like my 765ML too for 60#.
I am lookin' to get another Rogue built in a 60# rod. For blanks under 60# the Rogues are a great rod
Mark, you can get 60# topshot, just ask. I got it on mine.
