Planning a crabbing trip to Newport, anyone have any info on how the crabbing is? Thanks in advance.

Re: Crabbing
Went out of Tillamook last friday and droped the pots in 40' of water. Outside in the big blue pond about a mile south of the south jetty. 3 hrs.= 6 limits. We only pulled each pot once!

Re: Crabbing
Crabbed out of Hammond Saturday. Took 2 1/2 hours but we got 24 crab. They were in great shape. Must have been ten females for every male. If anyone can explain why there were so many females I would sure like to hear it. I use turkey necks, backs, or legs so the sea lions will leave me along. When you watch a sea lion swim up to your bouys and dive right down the line you will be glad you are using turkey.

Up-4-Air
Will those buggers get into a square trap(Danielson) or will that keep em out. So far I haven't had any real problems, but we pretty much stay on top of em. Thanks

Re: Crabbing
I know a very successful commercial crabber and he tells me that the females run the males off - that's why they usually get pots full of males and no females and that's why I always seem to get pots full of females and no males!

Re: Crabbing
With all the rain crabbing might not be so good. I haven't crabbed at Newport yet but I know some bays really go south when it rains. On the female to male ratio an old timer told me that if you are getting a bunch of females and no males to move because they tend to hang out with the same sex. I don't know if it is true but there are holes I have marked where I can't remeber pulling more than a few females and other areas it is nothing but. Anyone else have a theroy?

Re: Crabbing
I have found the exact same thing just below the yaquina bridge at the first part of incoming. More often than not, nothing but females here..

Re: Crabbing
NorthriverB, I think you're asking about sea lions getting into the Danielson trap. I've seen people using the Danielson traps but I don't know how well they keep sea lion from your bait. I use rings with wire bait cages attached to the center of the bottom ring. When I used fish for bait I had a seal take one of my wire bait cages. Using turkey I've had no problem with the seals or sea lions. Hope this is what you were asking about.

Re: Crabbing
I've used the Danielson pots and other similar pots and never had a problem with seals/sea lions, etc. I like to use what the commercial guys use - chopped squid in a suspended cannister in the pot - lasts longer and really works well.
