Default Re-Writing on your custom rod question

I recently bought a used custom rod and would like to change the previous name written on the rod.

Can I still use the steel wool method (gently buff it off); but afterward what sort of epoxy or varnish or paint would you suggest?

thanks in advance

ps...wouldn't scrubbing the rod with steel wool lighten up the existing varnish; making it a too noticeable contrast to the rest of the rod (rod is a Sage blank...translucent burgundy in colour...writing is in gold).

I would suggest writing to TH Custom rods on this matter. They are experts on this type of thing and could help you.Their email address is thcustomrods@harborside.com.

If the writing isnt covered with flex coat you can remove it a little finger nail polish remover.

Your looking at alot of work, If epoxy is covering your inscription, you have to first get the epoxy off. What I do is use a razor blade and carefully and I mean carefully shave the epoxy off then once you have most of it but not down to the blank take your finger nail and chip rub and peal the rest off. you can use flex coat or u 40 to refinish the rod. Just take your time and it should turn out great...Jeff

SOrry I haven't responded, we have been on vactaion w/ the kids and now I am heading to the OP for four days so I have been busy.

I agree with jkfrabel it will take some time, and don't expect it to look new, it will have a different color finish (dull) but you can get the name off.

What jkfrabel says is correct, but you do run the risk of flaking off the burgundy finish with the flex-coat. What I have done in the past is just cover the entire inscription with a long wrap of dark thread, re-apply another thin coat of epoxy or a few coats of color preserver, then your new inscription, and one more finish coat of epoxy over that. Looks great in the end, and your blank won’t have any battle scars on it. I’d leave the steel wool alone though.
