Default Savage Rapids Dam update!!

One line item in President Bush's $2.4 trillion budget is $2 million for the Savage Rapids Dam removal project, as reported by the Grants Pass Daily Courier today!

While not the 12 to 13 needed, it is indeed a good start and just making the budget at all is a HUGE victory for fish and all of us that love them! Further, making the President's budget adds needed leverage to see this gets fully funded and moves forward in a timely manner.

Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith as well as Representatives Greg Walden and Peter DeFazio have been working very hard for us and deserve a huge showing of thanks for their efforts toward the betterment of the Rogue River and all us that love it and benefit from it.

Yes!!

Straydog...I should know this but, is there an enforceable deadline in place now for the dam's removal, and will that budgeted money actually get something done?

Lured,

The silt will not be removed. The plan calls for leaving it and letting run of river take care of it.

Grantspastor,

The consent decree signed in 2001 calls for the district to stop using the dam in 2005 with a one year grace period, so 2006.

This money will not get the job done as it will require approx. 8 million more for pumps and pump placement and an additional 10 for dam removal.

What this does is increase the Feds. investment in the project. They invested $750,000 over the last two years. The more money invested the easier to get more and the greater liklihood of completion.

Approval of any funding from the President's budget is a big deal and gives needed clout to help move this forward by seeking funds from other agencies such as Bureau of Reclamation and Corp of Engineers.

Straydog, this is truely good news for fish on my beloved Rogue River.
I just cant get the rancid taste out of my mouth. This thing should have been delt with 10years ago. Those foot draggers and monkey wrenchers that turned this this into a 3 ring circus should be finacially responsible for part of this huge bill to the tax payers. Personally I think a couple cases of dynomite and some new pumps would do just fine. Leave part of the old dam as a monument to mans thoughtless regard for the nature of things.

I hope the Sprague River dam is next. I would bet it comes down farster and with less BS than the years it took to get rid of this MAJOR FISH KILLER on the Rogue.

I can't believe not one of the ****** pinko_____
______ haven't attacked this obvious mistake by the Bush administration. Surely there are many who would claim that this was just an oversight by Bush.Angler & Hunter G W Bush doing something for fish ? You can bet you won't be seing this in the first section of the Paper Lar's Larson labels the Daily Fish Wrapper. Lar's has upgraded the Oregonian from the status I gave it 15 years ago. Oregonian ? " Not worthy of lining my fish gut garbage can ".12 million bucks for pumps ? How much of that is going to more worthless white collar Salmon jobs ( studies ) ? Why not give the affected landowners money for wells instead.I understand most of the water is used for watering lawns. If I would guarantee the same results for 4 million and have it completed by 2006 do you think I could get the contract ? Oh OH...That would be radical results oriented thinking....I must have been in cyberspace not OREGON........What ever it takes ...I will celebrate it's removal...if I live that long
