WHOA....it looked BAD!
Headed for Tigard this morning (to look at boats, of course) and when we got to the intersection of Hwy. 30 and Cornelius Pass, we saw a spectacular wreck...a fishermans nightmare.
It appears that the Driver of a pickup, pulling a 21' SuperVee Pro, had crashed into the guardrail straight-on.The truck was smashed pretty well in front, but the incredibly bad part was that the entire boat had been thrown forward, off of the trailer, and smashed through the back of the pickup and it's canopy. When the truck stopped abrubtly, the entire boat flew forward like a giant spear. The wench bracket must have sheared clean off of the trailer or gouged through half the length of the boat. The 20' boat was sitting in the truck bed. I hope no one was hurt.
I bet someone here knows this poor guy. A classic blue older pickup and a teal green boat with a new 200 merc on back.

That's a bad intersection. We've seen many nasty accidents there over the years. Hope folks are ok.

Hogtide -
I don't know the fellow you're referring to, but I've seen plenty of these type of accidents, and they're not pretty.
A friend of mine had a similar accident carrying a ski boat. His boat ended on top of his car, and he didn't have any fun figuring out the details.

Sure makes you want to put those back tiedowns on tight...if they would even help in such a situation.

Re: WHOA....it looked BAD!
On a similar note, one summer my step-mom's brother-in-law (Trevor) borrowed my dads 16 foot boat. It was just a basic speed boat we used for cruising around lakes and fishing out of. Nothing special or fancy.
Anyways we were in Montana at the time and my dad got a phone call. He walked back into our motorhome just laughing hysterically.
On a I5 over pass in Everett near Silver Lake, the trailer had came loose from the hitch and ball. The bow of the boat flipped up, the motor dug in and the wind caught the entire underside of the boat and flipped it up and off the overpass onto I5 down below. Luckily the boat land in the grassy area seperating each direction and no one was hurt.
As you can imagine the boat was in pieces but the outboard still managed to run, with a minor oil leak.

Makes the extra strap on the Bow seem pretty important... always use one, helps with stability and bounce, and takes just a couple seconds to install. I use straps with a really high break strength. Fish on. zip

Re: WHOA....it looked BAD!
Couple of tips here...A.First..not sure if it would realy help, but there's an awful lot of sledders out there that don't believe in transom tie-downs...heads up!!(or down...if you don't use them) B.secondly...a few years back, the rod that locks my coupler onto my ball broke (big dip in the freeway/old age)and I had big "S" clips on my safety chains. I heard something dragging and looked in my rear-view mirror to see my 20 foot sled about 10 feet behind my pickup...and we both were doing about 55 mph. I used the truck to slow down the boat...cost me the glass in one canopy door, and my right rear tire...but managed to get it stopped and off to the right hand shoulder. Those "S" clips straightened out into "I"s...and the boat and trailer were 100% disconnected from my truck...so I'd recommend the threaded "D" clips. Don't know if they'd work...and hope to never find out, but they couldn't do any worse!!

Re: WHOA....it looked BAD!
Hogtide;
I truly hope no one was injured in the crash.
You mentioned the truck was smashed all to ... pieces. How did the boat fare?

Re: WHOA....it looked BAD!
I know the person who was in the wreck. Everyone walked away ok. Amazingly the Alumaweld was in good shape a couple of dents on the port side but definelty ready to fish. He left with his boat to fish clients this morning.

Re: WHOA....it looked BAD!
Onstep,
Thanks for the positive update. My entire family was concerned about the accident. Can't imagine how that boat got past the winch post and still keep the hull intact.
Alumaweld could have used a 'picture' of that for their brochure, "hull durability"...kinda like the Boston Whaler being driven over by a DC-Cat, ad.
