Default Silly rant...pizza sauce.

Many pizza joints offer two or even three different sauces.

Tomato
Creamy garlic
BBQ
Some even have pesto.

I like a mixture of Tomato and creamy garlic on my pizza.
Apparently Papa Petes Pizza has a strict policy NOT to mix sauces. But the manager in Ridgefield couldnt tell me why.

I simply ask any pizza shop to put half the typical tomato sauce on it, and half the typical creamy garlic sauce on it spreading it around as usual. Is that really too much to ask?
Never had a problem in the 15 years Ive been asking for it this way. Some charge a dollar. Big deal.

Papa Petes would prefer I take my $25 bucks elsewhere than to simply put half a scoop of tomato and half a scoop of garlic sauce on my pizza. They refused to do it!

No big deal really, Papa Petes pizza isnt that good anyway.

If they're charging $25 for a pizza, I think I'd be going somewhere else no matter what. Here, in the pizza-ghetto, there's Domino's large pepperoni for $5.99, Hot Lips, Rovente, Pizzicato, Great American or Vincente's ... and none are over $20 for a giant pizza, delivered. It would have to be something really special to sniggle me the extra dough!

Back in the day, Izzy's had a spicy pizza sauce option. It was the only way to go. Don't think they have it anymore. Izzy's special with spicy sauce was the best pizza on earth

I AM eating at home Dan...Im eating Pizza at home.

Home is an 18 ft travel trailer, a 10x 30 storage unit in Woodland, and a 12x20 in Maple Valley, and a 12-40 in Lincoln City.. I traveled too much for work this year to legitimize a "home" In fact, when I move my travel trailer, I wake up, step out the door and forget where I am sometimes...Looks like Ill be moving closer to a pizza joint that commits the time, the labor and the expense of mixing two sauces together. Maybe next week Ill be living near a steakhouse...dont know yet. Last week I lived near the best Buscuits and gravy on the planet, gained 10 pounds and had to move.

Heck, for $3.99, you can get frozen pizza or for a little more, you can buy a crust and decorate it yourself. Please, please don't submit to the extortion of a $25 pizza!

Youre right Pete. Thank you for the sound financial advice. I guess I spent too much time in Seattle this year. You cant SMELL a good pizza for less than $25 bucks up there.
But to suggest a frozen Pizza to a Native New Englander? Cmon now. Thats a little like an IFisher suggesting farm raised salmon for dinner isnt it?

Time for the downtown Portland scene ... Pizza Schmeetza, Rocco's, Pizzicato, Denicola's, Hot Lips, It's a beautiful Pie, ... $2.25 a slice or $16 for the full rack. Plenty of great options that will satisfy even the pickiest of East Coastians! There's so much good pizza here, it's disgusting!

Trust me Pete, I have the address for every Pizza Schmitza in the northwest. I cant drive by one without stopping for a hot slice or two of "green chicken pie" "genoa" or good ole pepperoni. But two slices and a water is 9 bucks.

I had Pizza from I think it was "Flying pie" in Portland the other day with friends, Very thick sourdough. Not bad pizza if you have some olive oil to dip the bread crust in. Not my style though. Gimme a nice semi thin, chewy bubbly crust!

You are a clever man Pete! Only you could turn a silly rant about pizza sauce into a worthwhile thread about good pizza. You da man!

Paddington's in Salem in excellent, and I mean really excellent, but I am guessing that it is not the "East Coast" kind of thing that Pete and RvW are talking about.

Now back up Pete, and give us more detail about those pizza establishments that you mentioned in your post.

I guess I should consult Pete more often to help make my posts a little more "worthwhile" for you wishin. Besides, it was a "Sily rant" not a "silly rant" (until a spelling **** showed up and changed it for me)

Off to find a good pie. Full report in an hour.

For thin, East-coast style, you can't beat Hot Lips Pepperoni ... by PSU down town or at 22nd and Hawthorne. For a more rustic style, thin crust, Rovente at 32nd and Hawthorne is awesome. For excessively thick crust with too much junk, DeNicola's has it (though their Monday all you can eat spaghetti is a better deal). For goat cheese and sprouts, Pizzicato is your choice.

Get the Winterhawk at Stark Street Pizza on 92nd and Stark in Portland.

RVW, I lived out of a trailer in Seattle for most of the summer as well, but I was in Issaquah instead of Maple Valley. Issaquah was a little more centrally located for me as I had to do a lot of work in the Everett and Marysville areas. The cost of living in the Seattle area is definitely higher. Luckily I made the owner of the RV park a lot of money on a business deal, so I was on a free ride there, but I paid a lot of money for mediocre meals while in the area.

I also worked at a Round Table Pizza in highschool, and we used to mix sauces for people all the time, although the creamy garlic sauce is actually just ranch dressing with a little garlic sprinkled in. Lots of people requested a mix of pesto and creamy garlic, which was surprisingly good. I still think that Round Table has the best pizza of all the chain joints. They make fresh dough and sauce daily, and get fresh veggies daily as well.

Dude, two words: toaster pizza. Cut an english muffin in half, pop it in the toaster, apply 1/2 the sauce you like, then apply the other 1/2 sauce you like. Lay down the cheese of your choice, then top it what whatever suits you. Nuke it for about 30 seconds. Pizza for under $2.00!

Since your in WOODLAND try Gulianos in the mini strip mall area just up the road from lamiglas!

Tina and I used to go there every thursday for 3 yrs. The owners work there daily and a great atmosphere, price, and PIES!!!

Also like the Cilantro lime dressing on a dinner salad!

I think 2 pops, 2 salads, and a large pizza is around $28

Pete there is a New York Deli on Barber Blvd near the Fred Meyer - its supposed to have real good new York style fold your slice pie - not been there - cause we do Papa M's.

R&W in defense of your shops disdain, I'm thinking they don't want their underemployed Intel Phd's to cross mix the spoons or they don't have a spare spoon - OK I made it up. I have also worked at a deli that the owner made us make sandwiches to his specifications in a particular order - if a customer didn't like it that way he'd toss em out. very hot headed old German guy very set in his ways, but I got to tell you he was right about how to build a sammy. I still follow those rules today (ie mustard never touches cheese, only touches meat) and my wife likes to try and switch it around just to see if she can make a sandwich better. Every time she gets mad at me cause mine's better. Maybe the guy who owns that shop thinks like him.

OK so where is the Biscuits and Gravey place - after dropping 20# I can afford a little glutny

Main Street in Banks has a pretty good sauce. So does Paradice Pizza in North Plains.

It's hard getting a decent sauce from most other places. Why is it some places will only airbrush on the sauce?

I simply ask any pizza shop to put half the typical tomato sauce on it, and half the typical creamy garlic sauce on it spreading it around as usual. Is that really too much to ask?
Never had a problem in the 15 years Ive been asking for it this way. Some charge a dollar. Big deal.

Papa Petes would prefer I take my $25 bucks elsewhere than to simply put half a scoop of tomato and half a scoop of garlic sauce on my pizza. They refused to do it!

No big deal really, Papa Petes pizza isnt that good anyway.
So let me get this straight, you've been buying buying 25.00 pizzas for 15 years and then you go on to say the pizzas aren't that good anyways

Next time you go to Flying Pie, try the white sauce- It's excellent!

In Salem, we like Wallery's on Edgewater on the west side. They've got great pepperoni.

And Leonardo's up here in the 'Couv. Over $20 and well worth it.
