Default Smelt die off

What's the word on the run? Are they dying off yet? Are the springers still coughing them up by the handfuls when caught? I was fishing the lower Columbia a week ago and the area I was at must have had 2 dozen laying in the mud and I even had one swim by my boots. It appears that some of the lower river tributaries might have had runs also. These fish appeared to be washing out of the creek?
