Boat Manners
With all the boats out fishing this spring, what do y'all feel is proper boat manners when you are moving from point A to B through and around boats anchored up or trolling? I see some going as fast as they can and don't seem to worry about the wake, while others slow down. Recently, trying to be a good neighbor, I slowed off the plane near a line of boats anchored and had one of the guide boats still giving me the "California Howdy". On the return trip down, I did not slow and was following a couple other boats moving at a good clip and the guide chose not to give any of us any "sign language" Comments please??? Re: Boat Manners
If you're heading up river (into the current) past a line of boats you will throw a smaller wake if you are on plane. Down current, you can go slow enough to not throw any wakes if you just idle past them.

Re: Boat Manners
We are all guilty of causing a wake. But, sometimes, some folks can be very irritating. Whats with the guys who run up and down constantly? Do they ever fish???? I understand running against the tide to get that sweet downstream troll, but these dudes are a full throttle goin' both ways all morning. The slough should have been Flaaaaaaaat this morning, but boat wakes kept me rockin' and steering throughout the tide.
Mr Ugly Ducky,Mr Green Boulton, Mr. Black 104'long ThunderJet...shut that dog down and FISH with us !!!!
Ya...I'm always a bit grumpy when I come home and do that "rockin" thing.

Re: Boat Manners
These are the manners i was requesting in my last post....I know the river is for everyone to use but some things people do are quite irritating. Last week when anchored on the Columbia it was quite peaceful until the parade of large wake throwing vessels Pete spoke of came down....Then a barge came down and was in the middle of the channel which is no big deal, but when the Queen of the West decides to pass it on the inside closest to me it's another thing.....My 14 footer was almost tipped over Safe boating everyone

Re: Boat Manners
There seems to be more people trolling this season than anchored. some of the anchored boats may have 100 plus feet of rope out. when trolling around those boats try not to cut in to close or they will own your favorite lure.

Re: Boat Manners
ProudTJDriver, sometimes with some people it does not matter what you do, some people think they own the water they are on,Salmonator gave some good advice. If yu are going to slow down then slow way down, if you are going to go fast then put the pedal to the metal. Good Luck.

Re: Boat Manners
I think the basic rule is to cause as little disruption to others as possible. The corrolaries are; steer clear of other folks fishing water, get up on plane if that will cause the least wake, go slow if you can't avoid throwing a wake or need to go near other boats, and never, ever, ever take your armada of 43 foot Carvers down Multnomah Channel during salmon season

Re: Boat Manners
I've got the same question as Hogtide - who are those guys who are constantly blasting up and down the river, and why are they doing it??? Have a "fishing plan" before you leave the ramp, go to your spot and fish. It's very simple!
I've noticed an over abundance of boats this year that are either under powered, or have no concept of getting up on plane. It's common sense and courtesy - all you have to do is think about what effect your wake is having on the people around you. Like was mentioned earlier, getting up on plane while going upstream and fast idle while going downstream works quite well. You also need to think about where you come off of plane, because that definitely causes a big wake. Sometimes the courteous thing to do is go past the spot you want before you come off plane, then idle or use your kicker to get back to where you want to be.
Do unto others as you would have them do to you. (or something like that)
