SEASICK!
The big pond had me fishing from my knees. This is the second time in as many trips. What is the best way(s)to prevent this from happening a third time. It's such a helpless feeling knowing that the boat ain't going in cause you don't feel well and there's 5hrs. to go. I sit here now, glad that I wasn't in control of the boat. I would have no fish and crab to show for my day of pain.

Re: SEASICK!
I've always had that chimin' problem too. I found that drammamine taken the hrs before, and(this is no joke) anything with ginger the night before does the trick for me. Any ONE of those and I lose it, but both and I watch others turn green. Gingersnaps the day before, all I can stand. I don't have a clue why.

Re: SEASICK!
One of my buds wears little wrist straps that have a button inside. They look ridiculous and I can't understand how they could possibly do anything, but my pal swears by them and he never chums, so I guess they work for him.

Gone fishin' with the Oak Bay Marine group out of B.C. several times. When going offshore they suggest that everyone snacks on gingerroot. They provide Dramimine, but recommend G-Root. My wife gets sick easily and says the Ginger works for her.

Re: SEASICK!
Fuzzy and I went on our honeymoon in Seaside( ooops... It wasn't Seaside at all! It was WESTPORT! sorry April last year. We had decided to go out on a charter boat and fish. I did 6 years in the NZ Navy, and was well used to sailing the big blue on frigates, sailing boats ...you name it! All was well... the sea was VERY choppy, however, about 2-3 hours into the trip I started hugging the side of the boat, and thought I was gonna die!!lol The only thing that stopped it was a suggestion from one of the crew to put drops of water into my ear, cold... but effective
By the time you start feeling sick, theres nothing you can take to make you feel better, however, as a precaution, I agree with the dramamine.
Its a honeymoon I'll never forget!

Re: SEASICK!
Phuny,
I went on a company bottom fishing trip out of Depoe Bay a couple of years back. The pond was foggy and choppy. 17 out of 21 people were chummin big time. I knew when I headed to that side of the boat there would be no turning back. I puked so hard that another charter boat pulled up along side and radioed across asking if we were clubbing seals . I haven't lived it down yet . Anyway, when we got back I bought some Tuna from an old timer at the dock. He told me that this happens to the best of us and that what worked for him time and again was to take Dramimine the night before and about 30 minutes before setting off. Have a good breakfast but not a greasy one and to snack on anything with ginger. I haven't been sick on a trip since. I like ginger snaps, gingerale, candied ginger..... It works and I will not go without it again. By the way, hospitals offer gingerale to postsurgery patients to counteract the nausea related to anisthetic (sp). I have found Vernnons to have the most ginger and I recomend it. I also look at the ingreedient list on ginger snaps to find the ones with the highest content of ginger. Some of them don't even have real ginger, avoid them.
Well, I hope this helps. Been there, done that and I know it is not fun. Last time I was sore for three days and still get email from a love sick whale....
Later,
Mr. Fisherman

Re: SEASICK!
There is some stuff called Bonine that I like to use. Its a pill like Dramamine but seem to work better, at least for me. The Transderm patches work great if your only going to be on the water for one day. If you wear them longer than that the least they will do is goof up your vision and give you extreme cottenmouth. I would not recommend them for more than one day trips. If you read all the side effects it lists you would never take them.

Re: SEASICK!
Trans scop patches work for me. Don't drink (alcohol) that is while wearing the patch. You go to sleep and miss all the fishing action!! Do give you quite the case of cottonmouth, but cottonmouth is much preferred to looking for "Ralph" all day long!! Kind of expensive and the Doc has to write a prescription, but worth the hassle and cost.

Re: SEASICK!
Never had a problem getting sick myself but some of the guys I go with have and they use drammamine and it definently works for them. They usually start taking it the day before we go out.Instead of your first few pills the morning before.TM

Re: SEASICK!
Take it from the COMATOSE KID (aka The Puker) there is nothing worse and I mean NOTHING worse than getting sea sick. I go out with some friends of mine to fish at Pacific city every July. The best stuff I've tried so far are some pills made by a company named Rugby they go by the name Travel Sickness. The main ingredient is MECLIZINE HCI 25mg (antiemetic). I take 3 before bed and another 3 as soon as I get up. I have to say that I've gone out on the ocean when it looked flat from shore and as soon as you got past the head land it turned into quite a chop. REMEMBER---ALWAYS PACK AT LEAST $300.00 IN YOUR WALLET SO THAT YOU CAN PAY THE SKIPPER TO BRING YOU BACK TO SHORE!! NOT AN OPTION! Too many tasty critters to be had. Thanks to all for the advice. Now I have to get back out there to try some of these remedies.

Re: SEASICK!
Hey Phunybonz. All I really need to know about you is that you kept fishing. By my reckon you caught 3/4 of the fish landed on 'Puffin'. I watched when I could from 'Pilar' and always saw you bowed up and draggin helpless bass to the boat. I don't know when you found time to hurl.
Rock on dude, you're welcome on my boat anyday on the big blue lake.
The bend is your friend!

Re: SEASICK!
Make sure to take the drammamine at the recommended time BEFORE heading out otherwise it is useless. Watch what you eat but I have found that keeping a full stomach helps. I guess if its full the food can't slosh around. Good luck.

Re: SEASICK!
Did you know that sea sickness is an inbalance in the inner ear problem, and not a stomach problem? It has something to do with the equilibrium (state of balance) thus causing the nausea. Thats why dropping water into the ear canal helps relieve the nausea. So what you eat doesn't really doesn't do anything to relieve the symptoms, although, some things will help you feel better after a good session of chucking
Just thought you would all like to know

PBonz, Is your boat named the "Puffin"? I know a guy in Astoria with a double-ender named "Puffin". Is it you?

Re: SEASICK!
NO, I'm not Puffin.....WHOA, FLASHBACK. The Puffin that I was on is a 21' ship. Don't quite know what kind of vessel it was, bot it was like riding in a cadillac. Funny thing was, I was slated to crew for the Pilar. I attempted to smuggle Mrs. Phunybonz onboard at the last minute. Wasn't room for 4 + crab gear. It turns out that Puffin had some cancelations, so the mrs. and I were allowed on the Puffin. This was a great deal cause, I forgot my raincoat. On the run to the fishing grounds i would look back at the Pilar in utter disbelief. They were gettin all kinds of spray overthe bow and I was dry.

Re: SEASICK!
Phunybonz - A great home remedy, but you really have to do it before the sickness even starts, is to suck on a slice of lemon or lime like you would an orange slice. Works every time.

Re: SEASICK!
I get sick all the time and I don't have to be out on the big blue. I have an inner ear disorder that causes nausea and I deal with it everyday. The only time I'm not sick is when I'm on a Boat in a river. I look at the sea and I get sick. I take the Meclazine and I get sick. You know what the bad thing is is I sit there a talk to Ralph and sell him all the Buicks in the world and say to myself I will never put myself in this position again, and what happens and soon as someone says "lets go fish buoy 10" I'm the first one to say "OK"! I guess we are the ones that have the biggest problems. We get sick but we love to fish. As far as I'm concerned I fish every chance I get and I only get sick every once in a while so the trade off is worth it to me. Remeber, the only time you really need to come in from fishing is when you crap your pants.
