Default Inboard V8 problem

Couple months ago over headed the engine. Took boat out today and would not do anything above an idle.
Brought home and did a compression check, new gauge from Napa.
Around 125 in all cylinders.
Oil pressure good, temp gauge came up to good level, 170 or so as before overheating issue.
Any thoughts would be appreciated on what might be checked next. Carbuator hoses and such seem to be in place.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Does it pop (lean pop) when trying to come off idle? Is the throttle moving forward? (cables binding) Does it just stuble and fall on its face and put out black smoke (running too rich)? Timing set correctly?

I'm assuming you're meaning you had headwork done after and overheating condition which blew a head gasket or warped a head? (overheaded? overhauled the heads?) Maybe old gas, possibly with water in it? Changed the fuel filter? Have a water seperator?

Need a little more info on what's happenning to internet quarterback what's going on though.

Or if you're meaning overheated, and nothing has been done to it since? Is the oil milkshake colored after running it? Does it still get hot? How hot did it get. Carb need rebuilt now or wires melted?

Good luck,
jd

Yes it has popped coming off idle (Does it pop (lean pop) when trying to come off idle?)

Cables are not bound (Is the throttle moving forward?(cables binding))
No (Does it just stuble and fall face and put out black smoke (running too rich)? )
Yes (Timing set correctly?)

No head rework has been done after the overheating incident (I'm assuming you're meaning you had headwork done after an overheating condition which blew a head gasket or warped a head?)

Yes water seperator. Glass bowl a cup or so large. No water in it.
(Maybe old gas, possibly with water in it? Changed the fuel filter? Have a water seperator?)
Oil pressure and water temp are good. Oil is clear. No milky color.

Wires not melted. (Carb need rebuilt now or wires melted?)

Thank you for the ideas.

Cool Re: Inboard V8 problem

I had a problem similar to yours , exept my motor did fall on its face for no apparent reason . Went through the distributor and fuel system and finally found that when they set up the boat . They cut the fuel pickup tube in the tank too long... The boys at the shop cut off a little at an angle and off she went like a scalded dog... Dont know if this will help just passin it along ... Fishkisser PS sounds like somethings going on with the fuel supply or spark to me a plugged air filter can do the same thing ,but i'm sure you have an arrester.

Bill,

What engine do have in there? What carburetor is installed? Did you do anything after the overheating - pull wires off, pull plugs prior to taking it out on the last run, etc...

Just trying to figure out if you did something and didn't put it back together correctly or if the problem is soley from the overheating problem.

Just a couple thoughts, one is check your oil for water to make sure you don't have a blown head gasket. You probably don't since it sounds like all the cylinders are reading the same. 125lbs seems a little low though, but once again all are the same so it may be just how you did the test.

My thoughts on what it sounds like is something wrong with the fuel system or timing. So as long as all the wires are on correctly and in the right order I would say fuel delivery is your issue.

Look for the easy things like a clogged fuel filter, then make sure your fuel pumps are actually working. My old Tjet had 2 fuel humps, one high pressure and a low pressure, of course when it stopped the engine wouldn't run, but it is still something you need to verify.
