Default Tuna prospecting this weekend?

Well my first priority is Halibut Saturday. BUT, if things look good I may be running west out of Newport to see what's going on out there. (Forecast depending) bringing all the tuna gear.

Anyone else considering it?

The last several years the final Spring Halibut season has turned into a Tuna prospecting day... This year... If the ocean allows I still don't think we will prospect...just not seeing that much to believe in.

Yes, I'm considering it.

Weather is looking ok but not great. Temps are looking ok but not great. I'm just not sure if this water is holding fish yet. It isn't the slam dunk we had last year with commercial fish confirmed. I still keep hearing they are a little ways out so I'm not sure it's worth the extra run just yet. Checking sources now.

Yeah I might just be a little to excited and eager. I'll wait till later in the week and see what the weather/temp/chloro shots look like. I don't mind taking one for the team and checking it out though. .

Yes, most likely from a southern port, it looks unlikely at this time, but things do change fast this time of year, & with this continuing southern flow pattern, it's still possible. 59 deg at times at Stonewall recently, soon very soon.

BTW, last year was a very vague report, but enough of a report to convince us, especially the straight west around the 125 line part, we never knew at the time if it was sport, or commercial, turned out it was a commercial boat, but they did not report it right away, & I don't blame them, it was when somebody saw the fresh Tuna for sale sign that prompted questions of when & where. Could be the similar this year.

I got my first tuna last year on this weekend at the 317 spot. According to my logs, we got 9 tuna, 2 halibut, and a bunch of crab on June 17th. There were 4 of us on board and we probably only got 2 halibut because of the tuna bug. I'll have my gear on board just in case the crew is up to it.

Talked to a commercial buddy yesterday. Couple boats headed out no landings yet. Will post if I hear anything good.

They only intel I have is that a commercial boat hunted for 10 days without a fish last week.

It is definitely a little later start than the last few years, but the water is almost warm enough.

We are heading west later this week and will run every 4 or so days until we find them.

I will post up reports either way.

Agreed.

I don't see the connection fully formed quite yet so my earliest prospecting day could be the following weekend at best.

Well, this is worth as much as you paid for it . . .

I just heard a 5th hand report of sport caught tuna late last week out of Coos Bay. It is completely unconfirmed. The guys that shared this are fishing this week. I'll get reports from them if they fish.

Good luck if any of you fish. I'll be in Newport for halibut Saturday. I'll probably have a couple hundred pounds of ice on the boat

6th hand report for me, as I heard from a guy, that heard from a guy, that heard from a guy, that heard from a guy, that heard from a guy, that heard of a rumor that Tuna were caught. I guess after last years early showing that caught many by surprise, & not ready, than the N Blow pushed them way off shore by the time there were ready, don't want to be caught by surprise again, now last year was the ending of a 2 year El Nino, so really it was no surprise to some. I learned my lesson about chasing rumors years ago, went way out out by the shelf, & not a bump, give me a trusted source of actual Tuna caught within my range, & were all over it. Soon very soon.

I have a connection or two in Coos that are on the docks daily. Commy boats are starting to gear up but to date I haven't heard a single reliable source of a fish landed yet. The intel is for both the commy and sport fleet. I'll find out and post updates when commercial fish start to show up at the cannery.

Normally when the water/fish gets to crescent city most of the commy fleet takes off from Coos to get early season prices. When that happens it's normally a week out for the sport fleet.

The earliest I ever caught a fish was June 17, I'm sure those fish were around earlier but that was on a perfect weather scenario where we had a constant 2 weeks of south wind and west swell pushing the flows quicker than normal.

Looking at the SST's and weather, I would expect the fish to be a couple of weeks around the end of the month in Coos. Looks like the water is around fort bragg right now.

We decided to cancel the tuna prospecting due to a sickie. BUt Halibut fishing was nothing short of epic. Fished an area that produced well last year on the rockpile and it didn't disappoint this year. First fish in 10sec of the first drop. We cycled through 9 fish to get the 4 we wanted. Missed at least another 10ish. It was a Father's Day trip and what do you know, my father got the big one of the day going 55lbs. 👍🏻

Had to run back to Salem to get my daughter to fish tomorrow. Saw a lot of bigger boats heading home an hour ago. I assume that means they took a long time on halibut or at least a few ran for tuna.

While getting gas late this afternoon at the gas dock in Newport, I was told a commercial boat had brought in over 100 tuna in the last couple of days. Guy said he was sure as he'd fueled up the boat. I didn't ask if he actually saw he tuna himself. I believe him, but of course there are those that will think/say he's just trying to get us to burn gas so he'll sell more gas!

I won't be going tomorrow, but will be preparing to go when the ocean is nice after this next N wind sequence.

Well, we took too long to get our Butts so we canceled the tuna prospecting. Even at the Hill we were 27 miles from where the commercial boat had caught them. We didn't have our halibut limits at 12:30 so we bailed to the Thumb instead of heading NW. Oh well.

I did hear that one of the charter boats headed west after a quick limit of Butts and hooked one tuna that they didn't boat. Take that for what it is.

Water was crystal clear at the ranch and hill. We measured 57 degrees out there but mine could be low because others said 59.

I have no doubt that there are fish around but finding the school stacked up could be difficult at this time. Hoping next weekend looks better.

We cancelled the Sunday prospecting plan after hearing they were 80 miles out, I think they are a little closer by now, but not worth spending the time & fuel to find out, maybe next weekend.

We went out of Depoe yesterday halibut fishing deep water.
We saw clear blue water. 59-61 water temp. @32 miles. We saw Shearwaters and albatros in good numbers. On my way back in at 27 miles I saw a few Blue Sharks cruising on the surface.
From everything I saw out there, they had to of been close, but I had a b-day party to go to, so I didn't have time to take a look farther west.
I will be waiting to see what the north wind does this week before I make plans to go on the hunt.

I got out to Nelson Island and water was 62 and clear. Looked good but got too last to head west after halibut fishing. A commercial told me the 316 spot had tuna already.
