Default Good Time to Take a Kid Fishing

Even though the rivers are falling and it may be finally prime time, do not overlook this time of year to take a kid fishing. Last week the local Portland metro ponds were stocked with trout - Mt. Hood College Pond, Benson Lake, etc. I took my nine year old out Saturday and we got two. Nothing to write home about except a wonderful time together.

If you are truely new to fishing, but know some basics, move around until you find someone who has caught fish. Ask them if they can show you what is working for them. You will recognize those who would enjoy sharing a tip or to and sharing a spot. It is a great way to get started.

And remember, it is called fishing (not catching) for a reason. Enjoy the experience. The less you worry about catching a fish, the greater your chances are. Good luck!

Always great to hear about people taking their kids fishing. It's a great way to build some lifetime traditions.

Anybody know what day the fish stocking happens in Dorman's or Bethany Lakes this week. With the nice weekday weather predicted, I'm just itching to get the kids out after work for a couple of casts.

Went by Dorman's pond last night. People were fishing so probably got stocked recently.

Usually around April 1st, the lakes are really biting here in WA (at least not the ones up in the mtns. of course) Offut Lake releases their net rainbows in April or at the end of March, and the state is stocking trophy-sized rainbows this month. I use the term trophy, loosely. Around 2 1/2 pounds up to 4 pounds.

My youngest brother comes out in 3 weeks and we'll do some fishing for sure.
