Song dog success
As some of you know, Limbhanger and I have been trying to call in bobcat with no success...We lost every battle and finally waved the white flag...
I was shed hunting near home the other day and was seeing loads of coyote sign...Fresh tracks and crap everywhere..I worked through a saddle and it opened up to a long draw down to farmland...Mixed fir and oaks with meadows....It just screamed perfect set up..That night from home,as if on cue, they opened up on the ridge about a mile from the house....I walked out and pinpointed the singing from what I thought to be the very saddle I had picked for a calling set up...
I left early this morning, making the hike in the dark....Daylight I was at the saddle..I picked a large oak to snuggle up to,waited for a bit and started with baby cottontail....2 sets of screaming baby cottontail, then let things quiet down a bit ,then went to grey fox/coyote fight...I have been getting lots of greys on my trailcam and figured it was worth a try...Everyone likes a good fight right?..
After the fight quit playing I just thought I would watch a bit....Scanned left, then right... Scanned back left and there he was, already out of the oaks and sitting on his butt watching..I had to pick up my fork stick and rifle, move hard left to line him up...I thought he would spook at that, but he just sat there looking...120 yards and no match for the swift,or so I thought...At the shot he started spinning and spun out of sight...I played one more set of rabbit then fight just in case he had a buddy nearby...After 5 minutes I figured that was it and walked over to fetch my prize...
Crap!!! Nothing!! No coyote,no blood, no nothing....I searched a large circle for some sign and couldn't find anything...Well,I found that hard to believe..I was sure of my shot and the hit was plain to see...I hiked back to the where I shot...Picked the exact spot he was standing and got on my hands a knees to look...
Now I found some sign...Bone fragments...Lots of them...I knew this dog was down...No sign for a direction,so I started a grid search...It took a hour, but finally found him a good hundred yards from the hit...Front leg nearly blown off and a hole in his chest that you could put a softball into....How he made it that far I cannot fathom....Tough critter...
I might be on to something with the fox/coyote fight...I think I will try that some more...

Re: Song dog success
I'll second that! Way to go.
Hummm, you mean you don't have to drive clear to central Oregon to find a dog?
Perhaps it's time to take a little walk. I'm Bored.

Yeah, I'd be interested to know what that thing weighed. My biggest is a 42 pounder from a couple of years ago. Unless you're 5'5" I'd say that thing's in the same ballpark.

Re: Song dog success
Nice yote! I gotta get the call running and try to hammer some more. I saw about 15 over deer season outside of Monument, but I didn't want to blow my chances of getting a buck by shooting them. Keep the stories coming as you get more.

Re: Song dog success
Hey Ni,
I didn't weigh him...Probably should have,but I guesstimated him every bit of 40 lbs..
He is on the stretching board now...Going to dry him out and cut strips to make fur bowstring sliencers...Also going to try for some more...
