Diggity Dog help !
Just wondering if any of you know a way to stop a digging dog ? My dog cannot wear a shock collar, so thats out.
She really likes to dig little trees and plants or sometimes she will just go for the center of the lawn.
She gets 1-2 hours of pretty good exercise everyday, and I don't think it's from her being bored. She can be let out (she is mainly in doors) and with in a few minutes she is digging. This does not happen everyday or everytime she is out, but its regular enough to be frustrating.
Within minutes she can really get a big whole dug, and I don't need to plant anymore trees
Anyone know a trick ?
Thanks.

Re: Diggity Dog help !
Heard of this tip at the sportmans show.
Pick a place that you think the dog will dig at.
Keep the dog inside so he does not see what's happening
Dig a 12-18" dia hole, put an inflated baloon in it and cover it up with loose dirt or leaves.
Let the dog out.
In theory, he will start digging and get a little surprise in the face, thus curing the digging issue.
I haven't tried it yet, but it's worht a try if you can predict where he will dig.

Our dog used to dig under the fence. I was told to use amonia around the area. It worked and she never dug at that spot again. Luckily she isn't much of a digger.

Re: Diggity Dog help !
Bury her up to her neck in the hole and leave her there over night.
Just kidding. I had a problem digger once, none of the common remedies worked because he would just switch locations. Finally I spent a full weekend of watching him and running out and scolding him everytime he started to dig. I really believe it is a boredom thing, some dig, some chew and some bark.

All dogs are diggers..... until they get a size 10 up their butt once or twice.

I completely agree, but doesn't make it right..or.. OK.
If you leave them out there long enough I think they will eventually dig.
Kennel them if you don't want the yard torn up and everything cheewed to bits.
For short amounts of time, the size 10 and scoulding will work.
Of course I say that in the sense that your disiplining...not just kicking to kick. I don't believe in abuse. Ya just gotta catch him in the act and disipline appropriately. outside of that you can't expect a dog to roam a backyard all day w/ nothing to do and not get into trouble. I think that expecting WAY TOO MUCH.
Kennel.

Whew! I'm glad you don't kick your dog for fun.
Its all in the name of discipline.
How stupid.
Its funny how none of the dogs I've owned ever needed to be kicked to get my point across.

I have two labs and both dig ,labs are diggers. At fence lines you can burie chicken wire , hurts the paws and stops the desire.

Your right to check me on that comment. Reading it today, it does sound pretty bad.
Yes it is tough love around our place. A little discipline from time to time gives my scoulding meaning. No differance from e-collars and training sticks. End result is still the same.
No, I'm not a touchy, feely sort of guy. I don't feel the need to roll them into a submissive and bite his ear to assert my dominance. Break the rules and there's a price to pay. It's pretty simple. So please don't judge me or my dog until you've hunted over him and shared his bed.....he actually has it very good, even if he gets his butt kicked from time to time. He's my pal, I would not abuse him.
I find it funny how many think that locking a dog up all day in a kennel is not abusive/neglectful. Ya'll give me a bad time for disciplining my dog yet your solution is to just lock them up. Chance gets the run of the house and backyard......AS LONG AS HE FOLLOWS THE RULES.
I suppose I could just lock him up too but like I said, he's my pal. I'd not like to be locked up. I'd rather get my butt kicked when I cross the line too.
So please don't pass judgment, you don't know me or my dog.
Let's not confuse abuse w/ discipline.

Re: Diggity Dog help !
We had the same problem and we had to hide and wait until they started and went out and scolded them took some time, but they learned. Some thing we used to do if they were digging under a fence in certain areas was to put dog poop in the hole they don't like digging though that. We occasionaly have one start digging like right after I put new sod down last fall a couple of times watching and we got that stopped. You have to stay on them until they get it out of their system.
