Re: chenille jig making
Kwicky for some quick and dirty jigs you can go to the craft store and buy pipe cleaners. These are chenille with a wire in the middle so they will stay in place. You can also use black electrical tape (cut into thin strips) to hold down the yarn of choice before wrapping the Pipe cleaner along the shank. These aren't the most beautiful jigs, but I know a guy who had done very well making them this way. You can make a lot of jigs for a little cash this way.
Fish didn't seem to care he used tape instead of thread. Good luck

Re: chenille jig making
Pipe cleaners come in lots of Purdy colors
Even metallic chenille......99 cents buys 100 cleaner sticks which make 3 jigs/stick.
I am not a big fan of the tape but it works.

Re: chenille jig making
I'll tell you the easiest thing to do. Either one, contact someone close to you who ties flies and ask them to show you how to do it (I know alot of people on here tie jigs, and can tie on some chenille, but most fly tiers are usually very proficient in working with it) or call your local TU chapter and ask them for someone in their chapter who will show you how to tie it up. Chenille is pretty easy to figure out, I've found it's easier to tie on a collarless jig. I can tie up everything from stacked hair bass bugs to salmon flies. I've tied up alot of jigs that were originally salmon/steelhead flies (RT has some and I just gave Os some experimental ones I tied up). Actually, it is really easy to figure out on your own. I'm a self taught flytier, and jigs are about as easy as you can go.

chenille jig making
Hey fellow jig connoisseurs-
I'd like to start making some of my own chenille body/yarn tail jigs, but don't have much of a clue on how to fix the chenille in place. I'm sitting here looking at a store bought version, and can't figure it out. If you can help, keep in mind that I have never tied a fly in my life, and haven't a clue on what "palmered" etc etc means. Got trips planned this Thursday and Friday, and would like to take along a bunch to try out.
Thanks for the help!

Re: chenille jig making
Those you will find are EXTREMELY easy to do. Palmering the hackle or chenille in this case is when you wrap the material entirely or almost entirely the length of the hoof shank. Palmering usually is done leaving some space in between wraps. You probably don't want that for this fly your making. So you would just wrap the chennile right next to the last wrap. If you were just dressing the hook with chennile, than tie it in at the back, wrap your thread to the front, "palmer" or wrap the chennile to the front and tie it off. Throw a couple of half hitches over the eye and trim your thread. Email me if you can't get it from the above paragraph. I read a couple of times, and it sort of makes sense.
My page has a few flies done up and I am going to make a section that shows a fly being wrapped.

Re: chenille jig making
Hey Marty,
That sounds like O's prom escapade.
The pipe cleaners work OK, but aren't too reliable (for fishing).
