Default going to Cabelas in Reno soon...............

So i am going to the candy store and just wanted to know from those that have been. Being over whelmed is easy so are their any strategies other than buy everything, i'll need someone elses credit card for that, to get to really enjoy the experience. Not sure if I'll get to go twice while we are there so want to make the most of my single trip. I know when i was in Austin for a few weeks I got to go to the ??golfsmith?? store of Harvey Peneck??? and it took me 3 visits to find what I really was interested in and what I really wanted to buy. first time I was in there I came out dizzy. Felt like i was drunk driving all the way back to the hotel.

so, its open eh?

I'll be down all next week...I'll definitely check it out.

They have so many big sporting goods stores in Reno now...Sportsmans, Gart, Reno fly(along with about 10 other fly shops), ORVIS(HUGE awesome store) and now Cabelas.

I was raised in NB, and I remember going to the Sidney NB store,.....amazing. Unfortunately whereas in the 70's they had the lowest prices anywhere, now they are more expensive than anywhere else. Look there and buy back here

If nothing else it should be a fun trip with a lot of eye candy!

I made two trips to the Kansas City Cabela's durinbg the Christmas holidays. Walked out without buying anything other than a hat even though I am an avid Cabela's fan and have never been disappointed with their products. First, remember that sales tax applies in most other states. Also, the product lines in the stores are not as extensive as their catalogs and is focused on those hunting and fishing opportunities common in the region. I was looking for a handheld VHF; the Kansas City store had only three models on hand, none in the brand I was looking for. I was also interested in a new shotgun. The gun counter was a madhouse (on a Wednesday at 11 a.m. no less); they were waiting on customer #25 and the next ticket to draw was #75!

Despite my disappointment, I'm still a loyal customer and love to just look around their stores to see what products are out there. Not to mention their animal displays.

Sorry to give you the bad news, but the Reno Cabela's has not been built. The last time I passed the site some earth movers were there but I am sure it will be quite a while before the "toy store" opens. In the meantime, you are stuck with Sportsman's Warehouse.

I will post a note when Cabela's has their grand opening but I am sure it will be a while. In the meantime, there is plenty to do here in Reno, including fishing Pyramid lake for the large cutthroat.

This morning, the Reno newspaper reported that Cabela's has hired a contractor and is now working with the subs. They are hoping to open the store by the end of this year.

I had the opportunity to visit the Sidney store a few years back. I spent about 8hrs (over 2 days) there. I treated it like going to the zoo. There is a lot to look at...it was the highlight of my trip (don't tell the family, we were on our way to a reunion).

I used to flyfish the nets area in the 70's when it was against the law to stand on anything in the water. Since returning to Reno in 1998, I have stayed away from th nets because the area is lined with people on ladders and I like to move when flyfishing so I stay away from any ladder fishermen so we do not bother each other. I have not caught any of the really large ones out there, just numerous ones in the 12 pound range. Now I usually troll out there because my wife began fishing with me and she did not like standing in the cold water. Flyfishing is just picking up out there and it should just get better from now on into spring at the nets.

i was also thinking about making a run up there this year . i have camped there but not had the chance to fish it . . i heard you need to get a special (fishing permit) sorta like the one you need for camping . and care to offer any clues as to where to bank(not flyfishin) or a good place to troll .

Well i can say the area we used to fish alot is right when you get to the lake from the road out of sparks the road stops and you can go right or left, that whole area is good shore fishing, find a road leading down and go for it, If you want to do alot of catching take some spoons with ya in various colors, chartreuse w/ spots always worked well for us, but like anything sometimes the fish just want a different color, take a very long rod that you can cast a country mile and huck that spoon out as far as you can and let it hit bottom, start jigging it in in increments like three swift jigs let rest, three swift jigs and let rest, reeling the slack as you go untill you are in to shore and repeat, they will usually hit it on the pause. Also another trick we used to do is tie a short leader onto the hook eye of your spoon and attach a woolyworm or woolybuger to the leader and fish the same way, more times than not we would get fish on the fly instead of the spoon but i think the spoon gets there attention.
It is a reservation for the soux tribe i believe and you do need a permit to fish it, its well worth the price. Also they have a slot limit i believe which allows you to take one smaller fish and one larger one, its been a while so things might have changed. Absolutely no bait of anykind is permitted i believe due to the fact that they have a sacred fish in there called the kiwi or something like that and they do not want them caught. so its strickley artificial baits. hope this helps some.

As far as trolling i think when you get to the stop sign at the y go left and down that way is the boat launch ,all along that shore can be good trolling, unless you have a downrigger than your options might be endless, one thing if in a boat that lake can get real nasty and real quick, just something to think about if in a boat, I would insist on good PFD,s for anyone going in that lake anytime of the year that the weather might affect it quickly.
