I'm interested in some late spring early summer camping at this lake and was wondering if there are some "definite don'ts" in camping this place(places to avoid). Open to reccomendations to particular campgrounds there as well. If it helps I'm hoping to take my boat with me (15ft Alu.). As always, Thanks You!!
Kevin
We do a neighborhood camp out the first weekend of June - we'll be in H loop I think along the highway. If you camp at that camp ground and have a boat make sure you reserve space at the dock. Its my weekend to get the kids from the hood on some fish. Did three trips with three different groups of kids last year and but 9 limits in the boat for the 9 kids that went - big fish fry that night. Last year was the first year I camped there so I'm no expert - lots of others will have better advice for you I'm sure. I would be cautious leaving any electronics in your boat - took mine out each night

If you're not up for the urban "state park" scene (Last time I stayed in a state park it smelled like a Grateful Dead show ) drive up and over and around to Southshore or Blowout. Good fishing potential right near either of those, too.
I recommend staying at Hoover on the other side of the lake. Bigger campsites, less money, less restrictions. The downfall is no showers for the women.
As far as dont's:
Don't bring your rig and boat there on empty. Gas is expensive as expected.

Last summer gas at Detroit Lake Marina was $4.00 per gallon.
We stay at the State Campgrounds, I like to have a shower.
We've gone there enough to know which campsites are best for us.
H-loop at the far end has some nice large sites.
