Default THE most aggravating thing at southbeach

I lost the complaint form so I can't postit. But every one needs to stop at the rv office and and fill one out. If I have to stay tied to the dock on Halibut opener because my crew is on a walkathon or standing in line I will be thinking postol.

Huh? Southbeach has the best ramp/dock/and parking lot between Astoria and Florence. Ever been to Garibaldi?

#1) What exactly are we to complain about. I like the marina there and I think the folks that work there are very friendly and helpful.

#2) I think shooting people because your buddy had to stand in line is a little extreme.

Must be a different South beach than the one I know. Launch fee gets you a huge parking lot, wide ramp, fresh water washdown, your choice of three different cleaning stations. If there's a spot on the transit dock you can tie up for the night and they will find your boat there and send you the bill in the mail. You can get a shower, park your rv, buy bait get your boat fixed and ..... whew. Oh and the Yaquina bar is easy and the fishing is pretty good.

Did I mention the really nice people there?

Anyway spend a day at Hammond during Bouy 10 and see how that goes. Me, I'm fishing Newport and being grateful for what may be the best port on the west coast.

Or take up Golf. I really like golf .. those guys aren't at the fishing hole.

What? Sounds like your unhappy for some reason with the South Beach facility. Come down to Garibaldi....you'll be on your hands and knees kissing the ramp at South Beach.

Oh so that's what's up. Thanks Jon.

If you're talking about the old restrooms it's a little bit of a walk but the facilities are pretty nice. There are some new restrooms right next to the store which is about a 1 minute walk from the ramp, I suppose we could ask them to put one on the dock.

You know when I was a kid and we were going on a road trip my parents made sure everyone went before they got into the car. Maybe the captain could take over this responsibility if the crew didn't bring their parents along.

The only complaint I have about SouthBeach is the long walk if I go on someones boat that has moorage way way way down at the end

With my bad feet it takes most of my will power to endure the pain of a walk that far but at least I am recovered by the time we get to the fishing hole

Did they get the new bathrooms built next to the new cleening station yet???

1 Trapper must be talking about there just being 1 bathroom next to the store

They ran out of money they said when I talked to them but the underground plumming was already in for a new reastroom facility next to the new cleaning station.

By the way I love the place but I think that was what the guy was complaining about. What I like most is the wash down area that faces down the hill . Told them next time they need a ramp designed my 4 year old daughter has the big box of crayons and could probably knock out a similar design in about five minutes.

I love south beach marina,I cant imagine anyone that has been to other ramps could complain about south beach

Yes they do need more restroom facility's but everything else is top notch in my book, only complaint i have is about the guy's that dont make sure the hoses are out of the way or rolled up and they drive over the end of it, for this reason i have repaired them myself just outta courtesy

Bathroom lines get long, and the mess sometimes inside is pretty bad.
But there will be better accomadations soon.

Quote:my crew is on a walkathon or standing in line I will be thinking postol.

And complaining about your crew holding you up. your thinking pistol!

Sounds to me, some one woke up on the wrong side of the rock!

Hang in there, new bathrooms are in the plans.

The Halibut opener is gonna be busy and we will all be there to have fun. Life is just to short to worry about a bathroom.

Local paper recently said that the additional restrooms would be installed this summer.....June I think it said.

edit - here it is:

Quote:
Port officials recently received an $84,274 grant Oregon State Marine Board, which will fund the installation of a new four-stall flush restroom at the South Beach launch ramp. Mann said they would have the restrooms installed by the end of June, just in time for the busy summer season. During a trip to Washington, D.C. with the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association to, among other things, lobby for "ample funds for dredging," Mann and Board President Rob Halvorson learned that the proposed federal budget contains $1.56 million in dredging funds for 2008, considerably higher than the just-shy-of $1 million they received for 2007

Would be nice if they place the bathrooms where the fish cleaning station is, so I can pee when I get to the ramp before I launch. Move the cleaning station on the out side of the ramp, because I usually catch my fish after fishing and am leaving not arriving regrade the washdown area so the boats are facing uphill and the water would drain from the boat and make the parking spots about 6 feet longer so an ocean sized boat and truck can park at an ocean port

Then it would be pretty nice.

South beach is a great launch zero complaints from me, I use the launch to fish, not to use the Bathroom. If the bathroom thing is a problem for anyone, bring a bucket the lines are really short.

Wow! I am from Tillamook and we fished out of Garibaldi for years, and we have had year round moorage there as far back as the 60s, and as late as 2003, and I will tell you. I'm with most of these dogs in here, South Beach is a gift from God far as Im concerned. This place is one of the best facilities on the Northwest Coast, and I have been to them all clear from here to Seattle and for price and what they offer its hard to beat. Just goes to show you. You can only please some of the, people some of the time LOL! or somthing like that.

The problem is that everyone liked the old ramp for the most part and assumed that when they built a new ramp they would take into consideration the downfalls of the old ramp.

THAT DID NOT HAPPEN.

Instead they started from scratch and didn't take into consideration any feedback on the old ramp.

Yes Newport has better facilities than most but the rub comes from the fact they made very little progress from the old ramp. It's kind of like a new boss coming in and making changes the first day without even finding out what the old process was.

Corrirod - Bingo !

I don't know how much input by people who actually use the ramp and facilities was incorportated into the new one.

It is a hellva lot better than most ramps but it's disappointing because it could have been so much better.

I agree with Roy and Ed.
Newport had the oportuinity to plan it right or better but they missed many features.

One big improvement is the multi wash down sites - many ports could learn from that.

The best boat wash-down at a port I have used, is at Winchester Bay. Warm water too.

The facility is great compared to others on the coast. I agree with BOE on the lenght of the parking spaces- I would like to see them not charge for overnight stay's if you sleep in your pick-up or pick-up camper in the parking lot i.e after you pay your launch and moorage fee. I would also like to see them not charge a trailer storage fee if your trailer is attached to your pickup and your boat is moored for two days.

Some other thoughts besides what was posted

Rod gets the "bingo" again.

When you look at the list of "little glitches" they made (see Roy's notes), it suggests that....the planning team did not include a person who actually trailers a boat and fishes.

Yes, the team knew there should be a boat wash facility / hookup, and so they were installed......on a down-hill slope exit lane.

Same thing with the tight radius corners.

It will all work out, and function well over-all. However I think it is a "warning shot over the bow" that for any future projects (in Yaquina or ??) they must truly include real stakeholders, not just an architect who went water-skiing once.

As with most things in this great country of ours you are free to choose where and when you want to do it. If people don't like the Newport boat launch go else where. Again make your choices with your pocket book and teach Newport a lesson in poor planning....
